Fox Reports gets an update with lots of new exciting features

Fox Reports began as a monitoring system for SkyBeam Sandbox. It was used to be able to file notes and reports about various people who caused mischief or broke the rules with repeated infractions leading to land or estate banning as appropriate, with the ability for all of the sandbox 'guardians' to have access to each others' reports. The system has a number of features geared towards making this information easily accessible by all admins without having the installation or trust network issues incurred with something like banlink.

I spoke to EriX Oh the creator or fox reports about the changes:

dana Vanmoer: What is FoxReports?
EriX Oh: A service for filing internal abuse reports and also managing Estates, via a webpage.

dana Vanmoer: Can you tell me some of the changes?
EriX Oh: - System supports multiple bots - that means, if someone has a sim in a different grid (like Beta), they can manage them too using FoxReports, and more "Bot-load-balance"
 - Scripting API support - means you can write your own programs/scripts (LSL does the job too) using FoxReports (Documentations will be released soon)
- Entire Server (!) replaced.... faster page load, faster line
- Entire Database revamped.... more flexible for future features

the system now also FULLY supports encryting: by adding an 's' next to the http - https://foxreports.lu
dana Vanmoer: Its even more secure?
EriX Oh: Yup, all clients get https free... (along with http)
dana Vanmoer: So a lot has changed?
EriX Oh: one thing remains the same..... the PRICES

Even more exciting are the new features which allow for estate level controls from the web. For any estate manager or owner who has ever been at an event and had to leave to go ban someone or restart a laggy region, the ability to launch a web browser and handle the situation remotely is a huge blessing. It further enables one to react to situations when not even logged into Second Life, like when one is stuck at work, for example. This also gives you the ability to give additional managers the estate level controls, even if they aren't Estate Managers in game, thus extending your management team beyond the normal 10 alloted.

Update on Cypress Rosewood

Last week, Second Life Musician Cypress Rosewood was the target of a robbery in real life when a burglar broke into his home (link). Cypress posted on his blog, “our Macintoshes were stolen, my wife's jewelry, two very special guitars including a 1935 Kay Kraft that I received after my grandfather passed, and my main microphone was trashed.“ Fortunately, he had some instruments with him as he was out of town, and having recently upgraded his computer had backed up the hard drive, “you can never have enough backups.”

Of the help he was given, “The outpouring from SL fans and friends the past few days has been overwhelming. It has brightened our mood and spirits here in RL immensely. ... I would like to thank a few people who have been instrumental in helping out with benefits and support. In no particular order, a big thanks to Woode Wood, Jana Kyomoon Hamlet Au, Delinda Dyrssen, Cellandra Zon, Pooky Amsterdam, Von Johin, Crap Mariner, Truelie Telling, Troy McCluhan, Torben Asp, Jess Oranos, Fricker Fracker, Hathead Rickenbacker, Escape Unplugged, Leanna Luftig, Frets Nirvana and Heath Elvejhem and so many more. All people who have helped this past week and fostered publicity making people aware of the situation, please know that it has just helped out immensely.” Cypress stated through donations he was able to get a new computer.

Recently, Second Life Newspaper had a chance to talk with Cypress about the incident, saying there was now a suspect in the case and a warrant for his arrest issued, “he has not been caught yet. I got the heirloom guitar back though.” The burglar had listed the two guitars on Craigslist, “he is not very bright, lucky for me. The detective told me to go buy a lottery ticket.” Cypress, “posted a counter ad, saying they were stolen. The guy that bought them contacted me, as he scours the guitars several times a day on craigslist.” Cypress was soon contacted by a guitar shop, and they had a photocopy of the seller’s drivers license.

On his blog, Cypress stated he had both guitars back, “I have no idea if the jewelry or the computers will ever be found. Will have to see what develops, and if this person is the actual person who broke into our home or not. The guy does have a record and the detective says they will arrest him on burglary charges.”

Cypress soon had to leave, as he was already back at work doing more music videos, “We are working a couple. This one we are working on is Europa Under Ice.” He also had another available, “Color my Dream.”

“I was able to perform live music into Second Life this past weekend again with the grand generosity of the SL community and it makes my heart sing. Thanks so much for the support. My family and I sincerely appreciate it. It has seemed like a team effort with all the positive energy. Sincerely, Cypress Rosewood“

Meanwhile Back in Azeroth: Third Expansion Planned for WoW, and Other Changes

It’s been several months since I got World of Warcraft’s third Expansion, “Wrath of the Lich King.” It took a while to get to the top. A couple months ago, I got a character, my bloodelf hunter, to Level 80. Besides that, there was a particularly memorable quest chain, "The Battle for Undercity,” helping to retake it after a sinister plot resulted in a coup. So the hunter ended up fighting alongside two of the most powerful NPCs of the game, Warchief Thrall and the Banshee Queen, the group slowly making it’s way to the royal quarter and beating the powerful demon that had taken over.

After that, still finding things to do, friends to chat with and hang around. Like Second Life, WoW looses a lot of it’s charm if there’s no one to talk to (at least for me). Blizzard recently added the Argent Tournament, throwing in some new action for my Lvl 80 character. Gameplay has also changed slightly. The spices I once needed to cook food are no longer needed. While using one alt, the special quest once required to get a higher cooking level wasn’t there and the alt was freely able to progress. Easier, though I miss having to go through the fancy cookery a little. My Rouge alt’s Poison-making skill is now gone, buying them instead of making them through ingredients. He also no longer needs flash powder to use Vanish to make a quick ninja-like exit from a iffy fight. It’s been a little while since I used him, so not sure how long ago those changes were made. Druids can now have the looks of their bear and cat forms changed for a more unique appearance. The level requirements for riding mounts, once at Lvl 40 for basic and Lvl 60 for fast mounts, are now Lvl 20 and Lvl 40 respectively. Basic flying mounts and druid flight forms can also fly faster.

It’s also possible to change a character’s race, or even faction, after paying Blizzard a fee of course. Considering the names some give their characters, there may be a few paying an additional fee for a name change.

Recently, Blizzard announced something big, plans for a Third Expansion: Cataclysm. The plot, the “corrupted Dragon Aspect Deathwing” returns to Azeroth, and quite literally tears the place apart. Areas long familiar to seasoned players will be greatly changed, the Barrens for instance is described as being torn in two. Two races will be available as player characters, Goblins for the Horde, and the werewolf-like Worgen for the Alliance. There will be a new skill available: Archeology. The top level will be raised to 85. Flying Mounts will now be able to be used in Kalmindor and the Easter Kingdoms, which have been unusable to them since their introduction. There will also be new race/class combinations available (video available HERE).

Reaction has been mostly favorable. The announcement was made just in time for Blizcon, and the few people I chatted with who went loved what they saw. Of the complaints, a few worried that in the PVP servers lower ranked characters would never be safe alone outside the cities as higher-ranked players could supposedly easily swoop down and clobber them. Others wondered about plotholes as Goblins were in charge or a big presence of many neutral towns. But the big talk I noticed was around the two races introduced. Of the Goblins, reaction was split, “Sweeeet! The best engineers in Azeroth!” “Bah! Who needs a Horde version of a gnome?!” The Worgen, the Alliance were happy to get them, a number of Horde were disappointed, “Werewolves in the Alliance? What the hell? I thought they hated Horde because they were too far from human?” A few Horde commented they would be creating an Alliance character for the first time just to try out the wolves.

Blizzard explained that they felt the Horde could use a short race, like the Gnomes for the Alliance, and there had been requests for Goblins as PCs. Of the Worgen, they wanted to bring in a more beastlike race into the Alliance, and one that the players were somewhat familiar with.

And already the jokes are starting, “Let loose the dogs of war!” “Who let the wolves out?” “The mailboxes are going to smell funky.” “Will flea collars be now part of the armory?”

And of course jokes that for the first time, a troll will be able to beat a “furry” in a fair fight, and now it wouldn’t be just in Second Life where humans and furs would be dancing with each other. ;-)

The Pied Piper I Ain't & Other News

Corve, left, and Larry, right.

But somehow or another, I still manage to have people follow me. Or at least the blog. Since my last update, two more people have joined my soundtrack, and I continue to be grateful. There is Corve, a gorgeous 22-year-old who loves to read, write and listen to music, and is an aspiring model. You can check out his blog here. And there is also Larry_Ohio, who runs the blog Patently Queer. The blog has moved and has a great new layout, and you can check it out here. Welcome to the blog, and thanks for following it.

Speaking of the blog, this will be post #201, somewhat of a milestone. I wasn't sure I would be making it past the first week, so go figure! And by the time this posts, the blog will have made it past 9,200 hits, so thanks to all the visitors who have found my little corner of the 'net, and special thanks for those who have taken the time to post their thoughts. It is greatly appreciated.

In other news, Eric & The Adams have announced they will have a CD coming out by the end of the year, and are raising funds to make sure it happens. It is more than a donation, it is an investment paying returns. With each donation of $20 or more, you will get an autographed copy of the CD and be entered for a chance to win an iPod Touch! To offer your support, click here. You can also click on the 'Merch' tab at the top, and buy CDs [I have them all and can vouch for their greatness] or some fun t-shirts.

Speaking of Eric, he just completed his month of 'Free Cover Mondays' with 6 great cover songs. This batch included Use Somebody/Pokerface [Kings of Leon/Lady Gaga], Hometown Glory [Adele], I Believe [Blessid Union of Souls], Fast Car [Tracy Chapman], Bad Things [theme from True Blood by Jace Everett] and Somewhere Over The Rainbow [Judy Garland]. He managed to put his own particular twist on each song and I do love his style. The above video is a cover of Matt Nathanson's Come On Get Higher. I am still swooning every time I hear his cover of the Hoagy Carmichael classic Nearness of You. All you have to do is join the mailing list. And I bet if you ask him nicely, he might even share the link to the files. He's nice like that.

Speaking of new releases, Casey Stratton has a new one out called Memories & Photographs. I bought it and downloaded, so I hope to tell you how much I love it shortly. It's already on my iPod, primed to be played tomorrow!

And Tom Goss will be playing at Delaware Pride on September 19th. I am really looking forward to hearing him sing live, and will be hope to see blogger Mark In DE, who writes the Tales of a Sissy blog. To find out more about the Delaware Pride festival, click here.

Update - News, Michael Feinstein & Cheyenne Jackson

OK, I have been a bit MIA here on the blog as I get ready for the parents 50th Anniversary surprise party. I am working on a video/slide show I thought would be 4 or 5 minutes that has turned into a 14 minute short film - LOL. I have been working on scanning the pictures, culling through cabinets of them, picking out music that is appropriate for them, not me... The surprise party is on Saturday afternoon on the 29th, a full two weeks before the actual date, so we might really surprise them. Hopefully that will be under control soon, and I can be back to internet fun!

steve A steve A

Meanwhile, I wanted to take the opportunity to welcome follower Steve A to the blog. Steve has his own blog called Long Haired Boy, which can be found here. I can identify with Steve when he writes that he sometimes is social, and sometimes antisocial. I tend to just say sometimes I don't like people. Stop by and see the blog, it is quite nice! Also, thanks to everyone who comes here, the blog is approaching 8,200 hits, which is just so surprising to me. I never would have thought anyone would be interested in the musings of a 50ish gay man rambling about music that didn't involve Cher, Celine or Whitney. And also several of the artists featured here have been very kind, stopping by to comment or Tweeting me some appreciation. That list includes Derek Nicoletto [of Telling On Trixie], Casey Stratton, Aiden James, Christopher Dallman, Jimmy Adams and Angel Adams. If I forgot anyone, sorry - been working on about 3-4 hours sleep a night.

In other noteworthy news, After Elton reports Cheyenne Jackson and Michael Feinstein are heading to the studio to record an album together. I was very excited to hear they worked together in NYC, playing at Feinstein's at Lowe's Regency. In June, they performed a show called The Power Of Two, and by the time I heard about it, tickets were sold out. I first saw him on Braodway in 1988 in concert, called Isn't It Romantic, and again in 1990, in Piano And Voice. Feinstein has released 23 albums, and I have 18 of them. I am a freak, I can't help it. And I find him to be very hot.

OF course, my appreciation of Cheyenne is well-documented on this blog (click here), but I will do a quick recap - he is gorgeous, tall, handsome, charismatic, and beautiful. So put the two together, and I was weeping I couldn't get a ticket. So when this album is released, I am so there!

Update - Daniel Boys

^_^ Daniel Boys Blog

Although it happened a year ago, I am just catching up that Daniel Boys did an all-but naked photoshoot for British Cosmopolitan, promoting testicular and rectal cancer awareness for men. He was one of many Brit stars who took part in the campaign, which I think ran in the centerfold of several issues. He was, and still is, starring in Avenue Q on the London West End, hence the puppet. Have to say, Daniel is looking quite good!

I just got word a fansite for Daniel Boys was recently completed, with a fan forum that is now up and running. You can see it by clicking here.

Oh, hell, the real reason I wanted to make a post was because the sexy shot and a chance to post a video of Daniel singing. This is from his CD So Close. The song is Better Than I, from the Dreamworks animation Joseph, King of Dreams.

To find out more, you can go to Daniel's official website here. You can order the CD here. I have my copy, and would recommend it highly.

Rolling Restart to deploy 1.24.6, Tue-Thu Sep. 23-25

If this is what you get when you log in don't panic:
There will be a rolling restart this week to deploy server version 1.24.6 to Second Life. Release notes for what is changed may be found on this page on the Second Life Wiki. There are no new features in this release, only bug fixes. The version that will be deployed to Second Life is currently on the Preview Grid on regions running the Second Life Beta Server channel.
The rolling restart will follow this schedule:
Wednesday, 8:30-10PM: a pilot group of ~3000 regions will receive 1.24.6.
Thursday, 5-9AM: half of Second Life will receive 1.24.6.
Friday, 5-9AM: the rest of Second Life will receive 1.24.6
Each region will go down for about 5-10 minutes once during the rolling restart. If your region stays down for more than 20 minutes, please contact support.
Discussion of this rolling restart can be found in
this thread in the Second Life forums.

The rolling restart is to fix 2 serious bugs in the last deployment on the forums you will find some interesting discussion and its nice to see Prospero Linden responding reasonably to most of the sensible points on there.

UPDATE: "the server deploy has been postponed a day, and will start either Thursday evening or Friday morning."

Let us hope that the updates go smoothly - I know many have been experiencing an increase in crashes since the mono rollout - fingers crossed everyone.

Eye on the Blog:

Just a short announcement that the Land Store will be taken down on Wednesday 17th September for an upgrade to version 2.01. It will be switched off at 9am PST, and all being well will be back up by 11am PST.
This update is specifically to add one new feature that we’re calling ‘Allow Neighbours’. This new functionality allows you to grant permission to other residents so that they can order islands alongside your own, something previously disallowed unless granted through support tickets. For more explanation we have posted a Knowledge Base article over here.

Eye on the blog - Lindens admit mistake over DMCA:

Responding to Questions about the DMCA Process

Linden Lab inadvertently disabled some inworld content this past weekend.
The problem should be fixed now, and we apologize for the inconvenience it caused. If you believe your content was inadvertently disabled, please try re-rezzing it.
If that doesn’t work, please contact Support at http://secondlife.com/support.

Linden Lab has not changed its DMCA policy. For privacy reasons, we don’t discuss the specifics of DMCA notifications with third parties. However, when we receive a valid DMCA notification, we send affected Residents email notice so they aren’t surprised when we remove content from their inventory and inworld locations.
The email notice explains how to submit a DMCA counter-notification to seek restoration of the removed content. Be sure to keep your email address current and make lindenlab.com an exception in your spam filter so you receive notices from Linden Lab.

We’ve received questions about removing infringing items from Residents’ inventory when an inworld location (a region name and coordinates) can’t be provided.
Inventory items may be subject to DMCA claims when the items are sufficiently identified. For example, if you can’t provide an inworld location, provide the names of the allegedly infringing items and avatars.

Linden Lab will conduct a reasonable search for the identified items.

Also be aware that persons who materially misrepresent copyright infringement in DMCA claims may be liable for damages, including attorneys’ fees and costs.
In one case, a company that sought removal of content protected by the fair use doctrine paid over $100,000 USD.
For more on this, see here.
If you’re unsure whether certain content infringes your copyright, we suggest speaking to an attorney before submitting a DMCA claim.
More information about Linden Lab’s DMCA process can be found on our DMCA policy page and in our recent blog post on Protecting Your Copyrighted Content.

Linden Lab’s DMCA policy has not changed, and this information is up-to-date.

New Viewer Pixelation Quirk

The new Second Life viewer does offer some improvements.
When I first used it, I got a beautiful view of reflections in the water.
But it has a rather quirky effect on some avatars. When viewed from a distance, some avies begin to look blocky. Some just look a little pixelated, some quite heavily. As one guy put it, "makes you look like you're out of an early video game ... 8-bit SL." I was told this is how the new viewer acts with certain video cards, apparently including my own

My own avie, whether it's my usual foxboy avie or the gryphon one that I wore for these pictures, doesn't seem to be affected as much on my computer, though this doesn't seem to be the case with others on theirs. Hopefully, this pixelation effect will be corrected soon in a new update
