WHAT’S YOUR HANDICAP?

Do you fancy playing an 18 hole round of golf and giving to charity at the same time? AND risk winning L$1000?  I think I’ll have a go. I can’t even play golf in RL let alone SL, but it’s an excuse to get out in the virtual countryside and help real people at the same time.

Evolution in the Playa

The excitement is palpable!
The landrush is on for parcels for the spectacular Burning Life in Second Life.
This event is based on the Burning Man event in real life that takes place every year in the Black Rock Desert of Nevada.
You can check this out on the web.
The Burning life Groups IMs are hot and heavy every day with questions and comments about the land rush and for a chance to get to the playa and chose a plot if you are so lucky.
I was able to make it into the sims during Friday’s rush. Dusty Linden refers to the land rushes as an experiment in cooperation. It takes a while to sort out who got what land and is able to build.
I found glee in those who have obtained plots for their artistic endeavors and some downcast faces still looking for the elusive plot. They still have chance to grab one over the weekend so are not completely forlorn.
One was thrilled since this was her third try during the past week and she made it.. There are already some impressive builds in some of the sims.
If you search Burning Life you will find there are many sims to visit when it opens on October 17.
The theme this year is Evolution and all builders are reminded to stay with the desert evolution in their building;
I enjoyed it so much last year that I have applied for a “job” this year but will be writing more about those experiences.

Relay for Life Music Event

Sat-Sun, July 18-19

RFL weekend covered 37 sims with multiple events and stages on four of them. Performers played from 2pm on the 18th through 10 am on the 19th. The list of performers is quite long, but some of the musicians showing their support included Quinton Whitman, ELiz Watanabe, Scarletta Roux, Shannon Oherlihy, Tone Uriza, Kim Seifert, Dominick Manatiso, Mike00 Carnell, Mason Thorne, Steely DeCosta, Dann Numbers and Buckley Moonwall, to name just a few. I was approached by the lovely Ms. Bourque Rau to put my hosting talents to work for an hour segment, and I hosted Tone Uriza.

I arrived early to catch Nad Gough on the Entertainment Bay Fest sim. Nad performed tunes by Burt Bacharach and Cole Porter, and sang with a voice and style that reminded me of Johnny Cash. Although he didn't quite pull off the Johnny Cash imitation, it was all for a good cause.

At 6 SLT, Mr. Blues himself, Tone Uriza, took the stage at RFL Shire and entertained us for an hour with soft, sweet blues. Tone chose to support RFL because of his mother's experience with cancer, and he can be found at many of the RFL events throughout the season. In speaking to the crowd about the experience with his Mom, his emotion nearly got the best of him, but he continued his performance with style and grace. Tony Uribe aka Tone Uriza is a 29 year veteran of the Tucson, Arizona blues scene. He has developed an eclectic style of blues drawing from the traditional & contemporary blues styles of the last century. He covers other blues artist only with the intent of bringing more blues and it's rich history to the world. An ambassador if you will, Tone loves spreading the blues wherever he can.

Following Tone was Kim Seifert, who opened with one of my favorite Alannis Morrisette's tunes. She sang beautifully with a resonant voice with a Southern lilt. Very nice indeed. Look for Kim in events, she is worth a listen.

At 7 pm it was back to Enterainment Bay Fest for Steely DeCosta. Always a treat, Streely is a great show to relax to, a very soothing sound and great guitar solos.
A guitarist from Kentucky, he plays a variety of covers, including CSNY, Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, Ben Harper, James Morrison, Firefall, Jason Mraz, U2. Benny King, Eagles, Plain White and Sam Cooke. He also does original jams with a loop station and prerecordings.

Steely was followed by Buckley Moonwall at 8 pm. Buckley plays harmonica and acoustic guitar with a southern flair. He plays a blend of roots-rock, Americana, folk and blues. Buckley is always a pleasure to see. Make a point of checking him out .

Sunday, July 19th
7 am SLT

Dann Numbers performed at Entertainment Bay Fest. A great entertainer in his own right, Dann can often be heard on the IndieSpectrum stream [http://81.169.149.182:8016 (SL Artists Music)]. Dann is reportedly very shy at first, you would never know it when he takes the stage. He gives an awesome performance. At one point, he broke his G string (again!) and while fixing it, he did a song for us a capella. Who needs guitar??
Next up on stage was Soundcircel Flanagan, who played a mix of covers and original songs, with accompanying backing tracks recorded in his studio. He opened with a Michael Jackson tribute, playing several songs from his Thriller album. Sound does a completely electronic set and has a great sound.
CelticMaidenWarrior Lancaster performed at 9 a.m. SLT on the An Inema sim at Long Journey. What a cool place it was! The stage was a giant mushroom and smaller mushrooms were scattered about providing seating. I have had the pleasure of hearing Celtic numerous times and always thoroughly enjoy her. Celtic has a beautiful voice, loves her audience and is prone to giggling. She is a great performer to kick back and relax too. This was a perfect fit for a Sunday morning.
I split my time between Celtic and Mike00 Carnell so as to take in as much as possible. Mike performed at the RFL Courage sim at Buckshot Bend. He has played guitar for 18 years and has been performing in a RL band called Jazzmanix. He plays a Fender Strat USA Deluxe, as well as acoustic guitar. In addition to some original tunes, he plays classic and soft rock covers from The Eagles, Eric Clapton, Pink Floyd and Jack Johnson, to name a few.

The weekend event was successful in its fundraising, raising over 270,000. Congrats and applause to the Relay Teams for their untiring efforts to raise funds to support cancer research and the families of cancer victims.

Cisco Live 2009

Knowledge is power.
This familiar adage has never been truer than it is today: in difficult economic times, it is knowledge that sets individuals and organizations apart. Knowledge is the differentiator that enables survival during the economic downturn and positions you for success when the economy rebounds.
Late Tuesday afternoon/evening I had the pleasure from a dear friend to be invited an event a first of its kind I had the pleasure of coming across in Second Life. The event was held at the Cisco Live Sim.
The name 'Cisco' is a company is real life company ( California based) one of the leaders in the information tech fields worldwide.
Cisco Live 2009 is a real life event that current runs from 6/27-7/2 this year being held in San Francisco Califonia. In addition to the real life events ongoing at the conference this year alongside the conference a virtual world aspect was introduced and brought into Second Life. After speaking with Tawni Ciscosystem, who works in the marketing department, here are some key points that have been introduced this year to the Cisco Live 2009 event.
The keynote speeches during the day are currently being streamed into Second Life to the Cisco Live Sim, there are various tech sessions held within Second Life with for various programmers and engineers and system admin specialists during the business day with various events to relax at the end of the work day.
If you work in the IT field you have the option to attend the conference in person In San Fran or the option to take part via Second Life Cisco Live 2009.
This event gives an employee a chance to make friends and enhance their skills, share and exchange information addressing problems that may arise in a real world setting.
For a major fortune 100 company to embrace Second Life as a business platform is a very creative move on their part, dont be surprised when you see more and business start to take roots and grow within Second Life.
If you have any knowledge of computers and networking and various equipment the name Cisco should ring a bell to you.

Mystery’s 3 Year Aniversary

By Bixyl Shuftan

It was three years ago that the Mystery sim was created in Second Life. And to celebrate, the Heart of Mystery Group is holding a three day 3rd Anniversary event-filled weekend from Friday May the 15th to Sunday the 17th to celebrate, filled with dancing and live music from Mystery’s own singers and some talent from outside.

The fun began on Friday May 15th at 11 AM SL time with the “Color’s of Love” party, with people wearing red, white, pink, or a combination. At 1 PM, Lexie Luan sang live on the top of the Queen of Hearts riverboat, followed at 3 PM by Ichie Kamachi with her graceful notes. The audience danced away to the live songs, occasionally getting a few Linden coins dropped onto them from above.

Saturday, the event started at 11:00 with a dance party on top of the Queen of Hearts, with Debi Latte singing on the stage, starting with “All of Me.” Mystery’s leader Tygeria Mirabeau wore a revealing dress that kept with her “Queen of Hearts” theme with all the hearts placed on it. The largest part was an animated cape which had a heart pattern that flowed like water. Tyg joked that Debi looked “delicious,” and the joke led to her starting a raffle with the prize being the winner getting to bite her (the results will be in a later edition of Mystery’s magazine). The party did have a hiccup when several people crashed at once, and rerezzing took a while with some people remaining gray for a noticeably long time on a number of residents' viewers. But the party went on with Debi’s gentle voice singing away.

At 12:00, the party went downstairs to the riverboat’s ballroom. The “Come As You Are” contest with Tygeria herself as DJ offered 500 for the best male and female each. Plus there was the exploder which got into the hundreds at times. It was quite a party, even if SL was acting up at first, though soon things settled down as we danced to “Queen of Hearts” and other songs. The winners were Anny Sweetwater for the women. Danilindo Wulluf was runner up for the men, with a certain reporter ending up with the top prize.

At 3 PM, it was back to the top of the riverboat. Kiaranne Flanagan sang while playing her guitar. This time the lag that hit the party before was largely gone. So everyone was more free to concentrate on Kiaranne’s music, which had Tygeria reaching for tissues at one point. The singing and dancing went on for a few minutes past the planned ending at 4 PM.

Sunday May the 15th will be offering three musicians singing live. At 2 PM SL time will be Mystery’s own Lyn Carlberg. At 3PM, Dallas Horsefly will be singing live. And last but not least will be Kim Seifert at 4 PM to conclude the anniversary party for the Mystery sim and the Queen of Hearts riverboat club.

Mystery is in the sim of the same name, with the “Queen of Hearts” club in the southeast.

Why is 2 years important?

The second anniversary feels so different from the first and I actually don't know why.
We seem to have moved from just another blog to a viable, respectable newspaper all of a sudden at least we are getting a lot more notice recently.
For example We have been interviewed quite a lot, often by students doing degrees in journalism or for other media outside SL, like Zoidberg Exonar who came to ask us about SL as a whole and also on the way newspapers work within SL, Zoidberg interviewed us for Vox Publica, an online-based periodical for Norweigens.
The questions he asked James were quite an insight to me of how SL is percieved by the 'outside world':
Zoidberg Exonar: 12. Do you think ethical and democratic aspects of SL might be different in the future?
Zoidberg Exonar: I'm thinking maybe 5-10 years down the line.
JamesT Juno: not SL - I dont think so, residents dont think in ways of making money - they live here for fun not realising it costs money to create this world - two opposites
Zoidberg Exonar: Yeah, I see your point.
JamesT Juno: Linden labs have proven time and again that residents opinion does not matter to them.
Zoidberg Exonar: What do you think, Dana?
dana Vanmoer: that the Lindens have their business plan of which residents are unaware. The way most residents feel now is like guinea pigs
Zoidberg Exonar: OK. Interesting.
dana Vanmoer: at least those that have been here any length of time not those that just come to play a game
Zoidberg Exonar: Do you think perhaps virtual newspapers operating in SL might have more rules and constraints put on them by Linden in the future? Thus limiting your freedom to print basically what you want?
JamesT Juno: they can try - but again impossible to put it outside sl so, inworld magazines maybe yes, with a web based newspaper like ours ? no way - they can ban our avatar but its free to come back and let James and Dana keep living in the newspaper (I would love to run an underground newspaper hahahahaha)
dana Vanmoer: or by suing us for libel - which if we are expressing an opinion or someone elses' I dont believe they can do
Zoidberg Exonar: Ah Ok. I understand. That almost reminds me of "Braveheart": "You can take my avatar, but you will never take my printing freedom"!
JamesT Juno: love it, but we tend to live by the rules too
dana Vanmoer: we can continue through other avatars or by our writers remaining nameless
Zoidberg Exonar: You can print my quote in SL-Newspaper if you want ;)
dana Vanmoer: they cannot prove who wrote anything
Zoidberg Exonar: I understand.
Zoidberg Exonar: What role do you envision virtual newspapers such as SL-Newspaper? might have in the future, not just in SL, but in virtual worlds in general? Do you think that virtual newspapers at one point might be just as important to people as RL newspapers are today? Please elaborate on your answer. I am here of course making a distinction between web-based real newspapers, and newspapers such as SL-Newspaper which operates specifically in a virtual WORLD.
JamesT Juno: yes - we do , but most will be an informing task - let people know whats going on, SL is a series of islands and most other virtual worlds are the same, finding everything that is going on is not an easy thing to do therefore, people will always need a central point to get information.

This is just a small portion of a very lengthy interview.
We are also featured in the new Venture Magazine which has moved to an online version with Solan Nightfire the new CEO & Art Director who interviewed us on how it all began and what keeps us going, read the full interview HERE
Thank you Venture for featuring us in our anniversary month.
Is there something about turning 2 years in SL? I don't know, I just get the feeling people see us as 'all grown up' .
Maybe you have turned two years, has peoples' attitude towards you changed? Do you get a different reaction from others? Add your comments let me know if I am imagining things?

Zurich City Opera House Celebrates One Year Anniversary

With much excitement and anticipation, Silelf Fisseux and Ligeia Westwick the owners and operators of the Zurich City Opera House in Second Life are announcing their plans for the 13th of November celebration, marking the first anniversary of this venerable venue. The recently moved and restored Opera House is an interpretation of the Zurich Opera House in real life Zurich, converted to second life.
The Zurich City Opera House at Les Nereides is a virtual i-common space for musicians and music enthusiasts.
My interview with Ms Fisseux about the recent move and restoration of the venue appeared in this newspaper only a few short weeks ago.
Over the past year, the Opera House has hosted concerts every Saturday and Sunday afternoon, featuring an eclectic mix of live musical performances, and spoken word presentations by writers, poets and scholars. While the emphasis is on music, Ms Fisseux and Ms Westwick and their many friends and supporters are dedicated to building a community that promotes the appreciation of arts and culture in all of its forms.
Located on the bay at the heart of Les Nereides, the large multi-purpose theater provides an elegant location suitable to any music genre.
On Thursday, the 13th of November, there are four concerts planned to celebrate the anniversary and a free gift for everyone that comes to the event.
12 PM SLT, Artist Torben Asp will perform electronic music
1 PM SLT, Author Diana Allandale will read from her erotic stories
2 PM SLT, Reis Alter will perform live vocals with all-electronic
3PM SLT, Artist Soundcircel Flanagan will rock and roll live from Holland

Halloween fun and a GRAND opening!

Last night was a whirlwind of parties but the party to be seen at was the grand opening of the beautifully built Casablanca Hotel at the Best of SL boulevard it was good to bump into a few friends Pup Witherspoon looked amazing as did Raven Pennyfeather of Rfyre and of course Frolic himself. The hotel looked absolutely amazing whatever time I set the sun at - congratulations to the designers and of course Frolic and best of SL who have lived up to the name with this elegant addition.
This was a great party at Flashman's with a few of the crew. Bixyl turned up to Bat away the Rats running around - but wasn't very effective and unfortunately my spike heels kept missing them too but Mami's newest gown from Styles of Edo was a huge hit all round - look out for the release soon! (I just love previews, means I can wear something no-one else has yet!)
I am not sure about 'beauty and the beast' but beautiful Breezes and the bat? Just don't let him too near your neck Bree!............
I hope everyone had spooky fun last night! I know I did.
