Interview with Tuna Oddfellow and Shava Suntzu

For quite some time, Tuna Oddfellow, “Fish the Magish” in real life, has run the Odd ball with his partner Shava Suntzu. They’ve entertained many crowds, as well as helping others through occasional fundraisers. Now, Tuna and Shava are in need of help themselves. Friends in Need

With the stories about the negative side of Second Life going around, such as griefers, sometimes the Metaverse can seem like a two-fisted place. And sometimes, one wonders. Would these people whom you call friends in virtual reality actually lift a finger if you were in trouble in reality? Recently, there were a couple examples of cases where the answer was yes.

Read the story in Communnity.

US Army to Use Second Life to Aid Amputee Veterans

The US Army is making plans to purchase space in Second Life for the purpose of helping veteran amputees back into society. Named the Amputee Virtual Environment Support Space project, the virtual space is to be used by the wounded soldiers after they leave treatment centers.

“The avatar will be able to interact with other registered avatar beings – fellow amputees, caregivers, even friends and loved ones – in a virtual world that's unencumbered by the restrictions of time, distance or disability.” One program manager noted amputee soldiers once out of treatment faculties found themselves alone. The virtual world would help provide them with a group of peers for support.

“As AVESS develops, users also may be able to check in with their professional caregivers, asking questions, getting information updates, and even seeing online demonstrations of the best way to do a physical therapy exercise or adjust a prosthetic device.”

The contract was awarded in fall 2009 to ADL Co, "We tasked them with coming up with a roadmap, letting us know what was possible in developing a virtual world for amputee veterans, and letting us know what issues there are in terms of privacy, access, authenticating who was coming into the environment, all those types of issues," program manager Ashley Fisher explained.

The first phase involved a normal Second Life region, to see what they could do there. Their experiences also led to the conclusion they needed a secure area from unauthorized avatars, especially griefers whom would harass the wounded veterans.

"We wanted to avoid that, because we really did want the veterans to be able to go in and express the issues they are having with the people they know are going through the same thing," Fisher detailed, "And also, we needed it to be secure, because we want to try to bring families, and possibly even children, into the world, and we can't really do that on the regular Second Life platform." The area is being set up in a private, and secure, space in Second Life Enterprise , a region for private spaces marketed to corporations.

Fisher made comparisons to the movie “Avatar,” in which a former marine who lost his legs is able to go about in a new body through the use of a machine. She explained she saw “tremendous therapeutic value” in the amputees’ ability to “define their avatars as they choose, and to immerse themselves in those characteristics as they interact with other avatars.”

Fisher expected some to depict their amputations on their avatars with prosthetic limbs, though a number would do so only as they became more at ease with the virtual environment and the others in it. The “transformation” where they would come to “accept themselves and their new appearance” was hard enough when surrounded by their peers in a hospital, but harder when trying to fit back into society.

"For individuals with disabilities, virtual worlds are a powerful way to connect with others, to access peer support and to participate in activities that might not otherwise be possible," Fisher explained. "This project will establish the best way to adopt this technology for the unique needs of the military amputee community."

Update on Cypress Rosewood

Last week, Second Life Musician Cypress Rosewood was the target of a robbery in real life when a burglar broke into his home (link). Cypress posted on his blog, “our Macintoshes were stolen, my wife's jewelry, two very special guitars including a 1935 Kay Kraft that I received after my grandfather passed, and my main microphone was trashed.“ Fortunately, he had some instruments with him as he was out of town, and having recently upgraded his computer had backed up the hard drive, “you can never have enough backups.”

Of the help he was given, “The outpouring from SL fans and friends the past few days has been overwhelming. It has brightened our mood and spirits here in RL immensely. ... I would like to thank a few people who have been instrumental in helping out with benefits and support. In no particular order, a big thanks to Woode Wood, Jana Kyomoon Hamlet Au, Delinda Dyrssen, Cellandra Zon, Pooky Amsterdam, Von Johin, Crap Mariner, Truelie Telling, Troy McCluhan, Torben Asp, Jess Oranos, Fricker Fracker, Hathead Rickenbacker, Escape Unplugged, Leanna Luftig, Frets Nirvana and Heath Elvejhem and so many more. All people who have helped this past week and fostered publicity making people aware of the situation, please know that it has just helped out immensely.” Cypress stated through donations he was able to get a new computer.

Recently, Second Life Newspaper had a chance to talk with Cypress about the incident, saying there was now a suspect in the case and a warrant for his arrest issued, “he has not been caught yet. I got the heirloom guitar back though.” The burglar had listed the two guitars on Craigslist, “he is not very bright, lucky for me. The detective told me to go buy a lottery ticket.” Cypress, “posted a counter ad, saying they were stolen. The guy that bought them contacted me, as he scours the guitars several times a day on craigslist.” Cypress was soon contacted by a guitar shop, and they had a photocopy of the seller’s drivers license.

On his blog, Cypress stated he had both guitars back, “I have no idea if the jewelry or the computers will ever be found. Will have to see what develops, and if this person is the actual person who broke into our home or not. The guy does have a record and the detective says they will arrest him on burglary charges.”

Cypress soon had to leave, as he was already back at work doing more music videos, “We are working a couple. This one we are working on is Europa Under Ice.” He also had another available, “Color my Dream.”

“I was able to perform live music into Second Life this past weekend again with the grand generosity of the SL community and it makes my heart sing. Thanks so much for the support. My family and I sincerely appreciate it. It has seemed like a team effort with all the positive energy. Sincerely, Cypress Rosewood“

Cypress Rosewood Gets Helping Hand After Robbery

Cypress Rosewood is a noted musician in Second Life, as well as the host of the “When Worlds Collide” talk show. When returning home on the night of the 24th, he got a nasty shock. The back door of his home had been knocked down and thousands of dollars worth of computers, and instruments had been stolen. Some of the equipment he had been using to play music online. It was a particularly bitter blow to Cypress.

Fortunately, word spread among his friends, who began taking action. Tony Gerber’s music shop offered music for sale with proceeds going to Cypress. Pooky Amsterdam’s “The 1st Question” talk show held a fundraiser for him on Tuesday the 26th at 7PM SL time. Chatting with Pooky about the fundraiser, she responded, “It was very successful, and I am happy for that.” The next day, also at 7 PM, Cellandra Zon at “The Pocket” club held another fundraiser.

Needless to say, Cypress was very appreciative for the help. He posted the following on his Twitter page, “Thanks Second Life friends & fans coming together to raise money to replace stolen items from our home & get me back playing music live.”

New Rape Crisis and Counselling centre opens

Many have read what Penance has to say in our Redlight section, she has strong opinions and a lot of experience but what many do not know is that Penny along with other volunteers run the Rape and Counselling centre in secondlife. I asked Penny to tell me about it:
dana Vanmoer: So tell me about the rape center and how it came about in SL
Penance Sautereau: Well, one day my wife was asleep and I was feeling triggery.
This was about last august, early, No one in my list was on and I needed someone to talk to. So I searched for counselling or peer support for rape survivors figuring SL surely had something. I found all of three counsellors All of whom charged $1500L an hour. And over 60 rape fetish groups
Penance Sautereau: And I was horrified.
Penance Sautereau: So I built the original rape crisis and counselling centre in kot to put free counselling on SL, and to exist as a reminder that Rape is NOT sexy when it's real, and what these fetishists make a fantasy of is a horrific thing when it happens to you for real.
dana Vanmoer: How did you find people willing to help?
Penance Sautereau: Well, my first volunteer came after finding our classified ad and volunteered. One of my SL wives was the second, everyone else volunteered after finding the place, wanting to contribute to what they thought was an idea sl sorely needed
dana Vanmoer: What has the response been like?
Penance Sautereau: Well generally positive, no griefers. We've thankfully only had a few people come needing us. It's the sort of vocation where you're happier to NOT be needed.
dana Vanmoer: Does that make you feel it is not needed here in SL? Or do you feel its because its not known that the help is there?
Penance Sautereau: Well I suppose more advertising could help, but we're the only result in search if you type in "Rape Counselling" so we're not hard to find
dana Vanmoer: I guess its a matter of if you are looking for it you will find it
dana Vanmoer: Are you or any of the volunteers trained to be counsellors?
Penance Sautereau: I'm not, but we specify that up front. Three of my volunteers are actually rl trained and certified though
dana Vanmoer: Do you give those that come for advice information for real life help?
Penance Sautereau: Always. Virtual counselling seems a good start for many because it's less personal, not being truly face to face, but we always recommend towards rl counselling when they're ready
dana Vanmoer: anything else you would like to tell people?
Penance Sautereau: Don't bottle it up, it'll eat at you. If you have these issues you have to talk them out, work through them. Burying them only hurts you. And we're here to listen, and help if we can. And to all you men, remember NO really does mean NO.
What this shows is that the help is out there if you need it. As Penny said RL help is the best eventual solution, but Secondlife allows those that would like to remain completely untraceable the opportunity to get help that they may not do in RL through fear of discovery.
Thank you to Penance for letting us talk openly about a painful subject.

SL : A Brave New World!

Trying to come up with a subject to talk about in my first article with SL Newspaper, I resolved to walk around. I grabbed my camera, my recorder and went out. With luck I could find some bombastic happening and really impress my chief editor. Instead, I walked, walked and walked...and didn't see anything newsworthy.
A bit tired, I noticed I was in front of a pub owned by a friend. I put the camera and recorder on the counter and asked for a lemonade (in hot weather, a cold beer would have been better, but I was working after all). Enjoying my lemonade and wracking my brain trying to think of a subject to write about, I was surprised by a strange creature rez'ng in front of me: half a meter tall, soooo ugly (you know the character Smeagol in Lord of the Rings? This guy was worse.). It came over and started talking and waving its arms as tho it were crazy, and I couldn't understand a word it was saying.
"Calm down! What's wrong?", I asked, and offered him some lemonade.
Swallowing the drink, he said, "I just came into this crazy world and I'm totally lost! Please, help me...or I won't survive here. I have no idea how I got here...everyone I approach runs away, and no one will help me."
Taking pity on him, tho I didn't blame others for running away...this guy was horribly deformed. I tried to think of some means to help him. Perry was his name, and he seemed a pretty decent sort of person once you got passed the looks. I remembered Orientation Island, the maternity ward of SL and thought of Help Island where all the wonderful LL helpers are supposed to be to aid poor sould such as Perry.
"OK friend, I'll tp you to a help island, the starting point for sl." "TP?" , he asked. I had forgotten the abreviations we use here would be unfamiliar to such a newbie as he. So I explained."Teleport?" , he asked."OK," by now I'm beginning to lose patience with this whole mess, "Just click accept when you get a message on your screen asking you to join me
So, off I went to Orientation Island. Boy, that brought back memories, my first hurs in sl stumbling about trying to make this new body move. When I got there several newbies surrounded me, "Hey, where did you get your clothes?" How can I get out of here"...the questions were endless I nearly forgot my ugly friend Perry.
Patiently, I walked with them all (Perry was just one of many by then) through each stop on Orientation Island. They were delighted with my attention and with the possibilities which awaited them in SL.
The point I'm trying to make here is that I spent 2 hours with these people and now Perry is more prepared to explore Sl. What I don't understand is why Linden Helpers can't do just what I did? It didn't take a great deal of effort and was extremely rewarding. And to my new friends : Welcome new residents, to a world made for all of us. Welcome to this Brave New World.
