The Chilbo Community

It began as a dream among a few people, a place where people could live not just as virtual neighbors, but a community. Since then, Chilbo has grown not just in area and numbers, but has attracted and continued to attract a number of artists and musicians, while continuing to help newcomers to Second Life. Today, Second Life takes a look at the Chilbo region and community.

Live in Sunweaver Islands: A Bargain Home in Second Life

Finding a place to live in Second Life for an affordable price can be a challenge. Sign up for Premium Membership to get a “free” Linden home, one will be paying $9.95 US dollars a month. One can rent land, allowing one to stay a free resident and skip the fee, but the prices for rental land and homes can be high, a thousand Lindens a week or more.

How about a place in Second Life where you pay not a thousand Lindens per week, but per month?

At the Sunweaver Islands, 1000L will get you for four weeks, a rate of 250L a week, a 512 square meter plot, 16m x 32m in size, with a 117 prim limit. One can rent as many lots as are available, and the staff will join them into a larger lot if possible, so one can build the house of one’s dreams.

The Sunweaver Islands have both public islands and private islands available:

Public Islands allow one the flexibility of having either a house, store or both. As the name suggests, they are fully open to the public.

Private Islands allow one greater privacy, but are restricted to residents of Sunweaver Islands only. One is allowed to build stuff for sale, but no selling is allowed here. Control over who gets on the islands and behavior is enforced.

For more information on rental space in the Sunweaver Islands, please contact one of the rental managers: Nydia Tungsten, Wensleydale Dinkins, Shockwave Yareach, and Rita Mariner.

Also ask what move-in specials are available. As of now, the first month is half-off the normal price for new renters.

Memories of Woodlin: Part Two

Woodlin was a great place to hang out and live in Second Life, with great friends and great scenery. Sadly, our home came to an end. But it didn't mean we had to stop being neighbors.

Happy July 4th - Dishwalla - Home

Dishwalla

While this could easily fit into the Str8 Boys Need Love Too category, I thought it would be good for a celebration of this holiday. In 2003, Dishwalla went on a tour to play for the men and women serving this country, performing the song Home among many others.

I thought this would be a great way to celebrate great music, handsome men, and the men and women of the armed forces. Their live DVD, Greetings From The Flow State, from which the video was taken, is amazing, showcasing a group of great rock musicians.

Recently, lead singer JR Richards released a solo CD, A Beautiful End. I will most likely be blogging about that at some point, because I do love his voice. But I also love Dishwalla, and some of the music they have recorded, including Counting Blue Cars, Charlie Brown's Parents, Give, Angels or Devils, and Somewhere In The Middle. You can check Dishwalla out on MySpace.

Eye on the Blog - About the Homestead Launch and Script Limits

As we have previously blogged, Homesteads will be launched as a new product on Monday 5th January. Those of you that own an Openspace should already have received emails from us explaining the changes taking place; this post is to ensure that you have as much information as possible ahead of the change.

In launching a new product, there are many areas that will change, including additions to the website, new knowledgebase articles, and of course, changes to the Land Store itself.

Timing:
  • January 5th: From 8am until 12 noon SLT, Land Store closed for maintenance. Upon opening, both Homesteads and Openspaces will be available as options for island owners.
  • January 5th: All Openspace regions to undergo rolling restart. Most will happen before Noon SLT.

Billing

  • If your normal monthly bill date is before the 5th you will be billed your new rate in February 09
  • If your normal monthly bill date is on or after the 5th, you will be billed the new rate in January 09
  • Educators that have paid for a half or full year in advance will be unaffected by rate increase until their renewal date. For more information and to confirm renewal dates contact the Concierge team.

Script Limits

  • We will need to implement script limits to prevent a heavily overloaded region from negatively affecting the performance of another region.

Timing for Script Limits:

  • In Q1, we will be gathering data on script load, and sharing this usage data with the community before deciding what the most appropriate limits are.
  • In Q2, we expect there to be Viewer changes to allow you to monitor your script usage against those limits.
  • In Q3 we will begin enforcing script limits.

An Interesting new service:

Recently a gentleman friend of mine moved home on SL - and with due consideration to the cost of a custom build, the size and prim limit of his new plot and the limited amount of time he has in world to build, he took the route many of us take and bought a prefab house.
The design was well done, the cost very reasonable and the overall lay out very well done, but even when he had hung his own pictures, put his rugs down and placed his furniture it had the air of a hotel room.
Two weeks later he excitedly im'ed me to come and see his new home. I tped to the front door to be greeted with a new window dressing - instead of wrap around one way smoked glass there were warm wooden shutters, which maintain privacy while looking more home like.
When I walked in the transformation was amazing, stripped wooden floors, soft pale walls a whole new fireplace on a wall which was now stripped back to old, worn bricks, the stair ramp had a new "step" texture added and the previously office like stair banister has been replaced by an elegant chrome art decco style banister.
Upstairs the transformation went on, now the space was an elegant gentleman's bedroom, with suitable pictures, more stripped back floor boards and a couple of pieces of period furniture.
I was impressed and said so - adding I didn't realise he had enough time recently to do the work.
This is when he admitted that he hadn't, he had discovered a lady called Willow Dhara does prefab makeovers to personalise them.
A long time builder of note, she had realised that a lot of people don't have the time or money to go for a full custom build, so she has used her skills to personalise prefabs. Prices start at 500 Linden - which may sound a lot but when compared to the cost of a custom build it means that it is possible to have a fully personalised home for under a thousand Linden even with the cost of buying the prefab.
I was shocked to find that Willow Dhara doesn't advertise her service, relying on word of mouth and random enquiries to generate business - which may be fine for her but for those of us who desperately want to make our SL houses into our SL homes it is an added difficulty.
So if you are interested in what she can do for you - or want to see examples of what she can do - drop her a note card or im her, you won't be sorry (although you will have to wait - she is, as you read this, engaged on transforming my home).
