“Step Up!” to Content Theft

In the wake of the wholesale theft of sims and content over the weekend, like many people we wanted to do something about it – and also about all the other content theft that we have been fighting for so long – in the Content Creators Association and in magazines and on TV shows.

Since then we’ve talked – and have come up with the idea of the Step UP! campaign, a campaign centred on a special day of action that everyone can become involved with, and that can empower and inform people.

We are aiming for a day that draws together action, education and celebration. We want a focus that empowers people – and rather than dictates to people, allows them to express their own creativity in a variety of ways. It also draws attention to the strength of feeling that there is here on the grid.

2) We need to make people feel empowered by what they do. And, because we are hardly the most time-free people on the grid – we need something that they can largely organise themselves!

So these are our thoughts:

We are nominating a day as Step UP! Day – which will be November 5th – Guy Fawkes Day or Bonfire Night in the UK.

Action:
a) On this day – no-one uploads textures to the grid. This should show the economic power of people acting together, without harming content creators. We want Linden Lab to see the power of the feeling about the problem of content theft – and to discuss urgently strategies for tackling it.

b) As many people as possible wear an orange ribbon as a sign of support for creators. And creators can design these – they can be lapel ribbons, they can be arm bands, they can be tee-shirts … the idea is to make the orange ribbon the theme of the day. And everyone who gets a free orange ribbon gets an information sheet – explaining what content theft is, what they can do about it etc. And they also get an information pack that they can give to their friends (which also contains an orange ribbon for their friends).

Why orange? It’s been used before, but has no overwhelming association (unlike pink or red ribbons). It’s a bright, noticeable colour. It suggests explosions and colour …

And it’s an opportunity for stores and content creators to become involved too.

Celebration:
The day ends with parties. Bonfire parties. That means that all around the grid, people have parties.

We’re not going to be trying to stage Big Events that maybe only 60 or 70 people can cram into. Instead we encourage every club to hold a Step Up! party. We encourage every musician to play Step UP! events. Everyone on the grid has a part to play. Everyone can take part.

Education:
This is going to come in several forms.

1) Info pack
These will be given out with orange ribbons in stores and at parties.

2) Media
Audio and Visual service ads. The Press. The Blogsphere – everyone can play there part in getting out the message that we have had enough, and we have chosen to Step UP! against content theft.

3) Video
Short informational films – tutorials about content theft.

On the Designing Worlds shows we’ve talked again and again about the need for a social shift – so that people see content theft as socially and morally unacceptable. So … let’s go for it!

Watch this space for more details on how you can become involved, and how you can share with us your plans for Step UP! Day.

The concept originates with a small group – Angie Mornington, Gabrielle Riel, Gwen Carillon and Saffia Widdershins. But more and more people are now becoming involved. And you can too.

Great Lakes Machinama Festival in Second Life

By Nazz Lane

On Sunday, the 16th of August, the first Great Lakes Machinama Festival was held at Memphis Smoke, a well known blues establishment in suburban Detroit. The festival also billed itself as a “mash-up” or “mixed reality” event, as both a real life crowd watched the festivities along with avatars from the virtual world of second life at the Callidora Beach Concert Stage. Making her second life debut was Liz Larin, who took the stage at Memphis Smoke performing an hour set, while her avatar Miz1000 Hirszhorn appeared simultaneously on stage at Callidora. The festival was sponsored by the Stratton Foundation, a private foundation located in Metropolitan Detroit, with “a mission to help students learn, discover and develop successful careers in science and technology”. The event began at 5 pm EDT (2 pm PDT/SLT) and was free in both realities. The foundation used the event as “a benefit to raise funds for scholarships for students studying entertainment arts at the College for Creative Studies in Detroit”.

When I’d first heard about the festival, I had to read the notice twice. I thought, “Wow! A mixed reality event happening in my own back yard” and I knew that I had to be a part of it. I followed a link to the Stratton Foundation web site and uncovered more information about the festival. I also saw that the foundation produced a regular podcast series, one of which had been recorded in SL with Callidora owner Renfew Sperber. The next time in-world, I tracked down avatar Doug Dratman (aka Douglas Stratton) President of the foundation and introduced myself via IM. Doug and I met in second life shortly after that for a brief discussion about the festival and second life. We then made arrangements to meet in real life when the time for the event drew near.

On the day of our meeting as I drove, the thought occurred to me that its right around now in many of the articles where I write, “I ported over to meet ...” However for this article I’m in my car driving north on the freeway to meet with Doug at a local restaurant. We arrived within seconds of each other and shook hands as a waiter escorted us to a table on the patio outside. The day was near perfect and we joked about it being like every day in SL as the sky, with nary a cloud in sight, looked much like a “Linden” sky.

“Tell me, how did you find out about second life Doug?” I asked

“I read an article in the Detroit Free Press. I spent a few months poking around the edges, feeling a bit odd and reluctant to jump in.” He replied.

“What was it that got you and the Stratton Foundation engaged then?”

“I found a guide book about second life, it helped me to understand it a lot better. From there I created an account and logged in, finding myself at Orientation Island. It was a very unusual experience, interacting with other avatars … socializing. We discussed as a board doing more in virtual worlds and it was my son who became engaged with Callidora. We found out about the work there on the cancer fundraising and established a connection with Renfew and her brother msw tomorrow.”

“And that led to doing the Great Lakes Machinama Festival as a mixed reality event?” I asked.

“We had a series of meeting with them to understand and plan this out. It’s been a wonderful experience for us.” He replied and then added, “I hope you don’t mind, but I invited two others people to lunch with us, both have been part of the team working on the technical side of things with both venues.”

We were joined at lunch by Tom Lavigne and Joseph Craig, both from IDEAcore, a Detroit based Technology Company. We exchanged thoughts and commentary on the event, the promise of virtual world technology for entertainment and the arts, along with my experiences in second life. The luncheon over, the three departed to the venue for a test run in preparation for Sunday’s event and I returned home to write up my notes.

In world once again, I contacted Renfew Sperber, owner of the Callidora SIM. She had this to say about the event. “This is a very exciting project and working with the Stratton’s, Liz and the rest of the Detroit team an amazing experience. We are thrilled to be a part of this and honored to host Liz's mash-up debut in Second Life. The opportunity to work with an organization that is fostering art and technology education and to provide further exposure of the positive aspects of Second Life and the potential of the technology is something that I am very passionate about. The Stratton Foundation is creating an important bridge that showcases the way that virtual technology can be used to foster real world projects.”

On the day of the festival, I made the drive to Memphis Smoke, excited at being on the RL side of the screen at a mixed reality event. I wasn’t disappointed. When I arrived it had just begun as Doug introduced the first of fourteen Machinama selected for the event. Taking over as MC for a brief period during the presentation was Scott Bogoniewski from the college, who introduced and provided commentary on the entries created by students of the school. The last one presented to the Memphis Smoke crowd was the Stratton Foundation’s prize winner, “Made of Sound”. The Machinama had been created by Jayna Shropshire, a student at the College for Creative Studies who used the song written and performed by Liz Larin, as the basis for her scholarship winning entry. Ms Larin had won an award in her own right for the song and she accompanied the presentation of the video with a live performance of “Made of Sound”. With the viewing of Ms Shropshire’s entry complete, a short pause occurred as connections were made to second life and then Liz Larin took the stage, virtual and real to perform a one hour set where she rocked both worlds with a range of selections, original and covers.

African Mangroves and More

This is earth week in sl as you know from the Events section.
There are activities going on all over sl to raise awareness of the environmental need for saving our planet.
I was sorry to miss the opening at action Island on the 18th. This morning I went over to Africa Alive Live in the Estings sim. Quite a few people showed up to take the tour of the mangroves with the leader, artemisia Mathy, She guided us through the mangroves along a boardwalk, occasionally jumping in the water . Along the way are informational maps and slide shows and posters showing what is being done to preserve the mangroves in Africa along with the flora and fauna that inhabit them It was an informative and a delight to the senses.
The sights and sounds of the birds and animals that live there made it enjoyable.
Artemisia explained that people from all over the world are visiting the four month old exhibit perhaps tracing their roots. There is a classroom and an auditorium for events.
Videos are shown there and one can also pick up a list of videos on the web regarding many environmental issues. You can find artifacts from Africa in the shop near the auditorium and also some African freebies.
I will be checking out more of the events during the week and reporting on them but you can see what is happening also by visiting the website, http://slearthweek.wordpress.com/ .
You can pick up a Hud at the locations with the list of events also.
Be sure you put the Africa sim on the list of places to visit. I plan to go back there again . Estings 248,119,21

Exclusive first view of the 7 sins dresses

Last night James and I sat and talked to Nevar Lobo and Amethyst Starostin about this years Clothing fair benefitting RFL and these gorgeous gowns you can see here for the very first time.

Dana: Tell me about the idea of the 7 sins dresses and the pirate theme
Nevar Lobo: Well way back last year when we were talking about the fair we threw out ideas for themes and Haroldthe Burrel wanted to do the 7 sins.
JamesT Juno: So orginally the sims were to be themed around the 7 sins?
Amethyst Starostin: actually the first idea was the 7 wonders of the medieval world
Nevar: We never did anything with 7 sins untill later when Synergy (Devonshire) found the dresses, well the pictures for the dresses
Amethyst: and then we kept kicking stuff around over the summer
JamesT: so who chose pirates and why?
Amethyst: Well...when Pips Fetid was still the head of the build team...she and her team had kicked it around... the medieval builds we had in mind were very time consuming so they started to discuss other options and came up with pirates partially because the Raider's theme song is "Airship Pirates" by Abney Park...but I could be wrong about that reasoning
Nevar: When pips left because of Real LIfe .. we just stuck with the theme and it was at that time we went back to the pictures of the 7 deadly sins and decided we would do an auction
Amethyst: there was a song Harry (Haroldthe Burrel) kept referring to... "the Pirates and the 7 deadly sins" and that's how we tied it
Dana: The seven sins dresses can you tell me what they are about, who made them etc....
Nevar: seven deadly sins designs ..

wrath ... Raven Pennyfeather
sloth .... moxie polano
lust ... Paul Lapointe and Bastchild Lotus
envy .... swaffette firefly
vanity .... wiccan sojuorner
gluttony ... nicky ree
avarice... Lemania Indigo

Amethyst: The artwork these are based on is truly magnificent and have inspired some amazing creations from the designers.
We approached 7 designers to create an interpretation of the dresses in the paintings for a one of a kind auction benefitting RFL. Each dress is the only one, the winning bidders will be the only person to wear that gown
Dana: and its to be a silent auction?
Nevar: We are going to use an auction script like we use when we do our Art Auctions... so people will be able to come place their bids... names will not be known, however, the top bid will show then at 8pm slt on SUnday the 22nd after the last Fashion show we will announce the winners of the gowns

Dana: What has been the hardest part of setting up an event this size?
Nevar: For me its been getting everyone here at the fair ...and dealing with wanting to keep letting people in and not cut off the number of designers... every day i get someone else wanting to be a part of this event .. and its hard to say no
Amethyst: For me it has been trying to remind everyone this is a team effort and to work together for the big picture

Dana: How did you manage to get 9 sims?
Amethyst: Through the excitement of a couple of people that weren't afraid to dream big with us we originally planned 9, but couldn't make it happen, so we rethought it to 6 and then we met with Babe and Eyeing Daligdig and their enthusiasm was amazing within that hour we were realizing our dream of 9 sims!
Nevar: We have to thank Eyeing's RL company too , they help cover some of those sims ..

Dana: Tell me how it works: each sim is sponsored?
Nevar: The sponsorship pays for the tier of the sim ... all the sims are brand new brought online by Ohana land group. The donations of the advertising , the designers deposits and treasure hunts .. all those funds will go right to RFL
Dana: How did you find the sponsors?
Nevar: We had a couple of designers and other people tell us if you need help covering tier let us know we will pay for one so .. that is actually how the idea of sim sponsors came about we felt we needed to do something for those people to thank them
so then we sent out notecards about advertising and on there was a level for sim sponsors and that is how we found the rest of the sponsors.

JamesT: One of the criticisms heard often at big events is lag, what have you done to help that this year
Amethyst: we've been very cognizant of lag, we've kept the build prims to a minimum, small texture sizes and limited use of scripts and sculpties plus lots of natural decorations... creative use of water and land
Nevar: All i can do is hope that with the amount of prim that is open on the sims and the wide space of area we will have more flow to lessen the client side lag
People need to realize that when they come to events like this.. to Shop not to wear alot of prim .. take shoes off ... and remove ao's and huds... other people are shopping and honestly they dont care what you look like they are here for the designers good stuff.

Dana: where can readers find out about events happening at the fair?
Nevar: all events are being listed in the events under search also they can follow in the blog
http://slrflclothingfair.blogspot.com/
also through you and through the designer groups of the different designers who are here at the fair. The newpaper and the blog will be the most upto date info on the fair
Dana: what to you is the most important factor of the clothing fair?
Nevar: To me ... the most important factor is RFL ... and that is why this fair benefits RFL this is all about community and raising money to help find a cure for cancer ... Together we can
Amethyst: we do this in the hope that one life will be saved...so that no one has to lose the people they love to this disease

Amethyst: The theme for this year's Relay campaign is One World, One Hope... it's about embracing our diversity and coming together for a common cause.. and my prayer is...as people work this year on Relay... that they remember this is not about them...but something much bigger than they will ever be
Nevar: i have one thing to say that i need the readers to know ... when they are shopping through this event .... and look in the stores... There are RFL vendors .. .. buy stuff .from those vendors... do the treasure hunt and remember that it takes only 1 L to make a difference ... that Together we find a cure .... and that is my hope that in my lifetime we will find one
The fair opens monday at 10am slt we hope everyone is knocking the doors down when we open the sims.

Dana: is there anyone you would especially like to mention?
Nevar: I would like to give a very special thanks to Moxie Polano ... who did all these wonderful stores... To Eyeing and Babe Daligdig for the sims... to Viscount Menatep for his building and getting us these great ships... You and James... for the continued support and partnerrship on this event ...Every designer who participates and of course the Raiders. Timeless modeling agency and lastly .. my wife .. cuz wihtout her i would have lost it a long time ago
Amethyst: there were many people who gathered to make this a success...they all deserve a big round of applause
Nevar: Together we will find a cure !

Crystal Sands closes its doors with a bang!

It was definitely a sad day for the whole SL music community as Crystal Sands was closed its doors with a concert.
I really enjoyed the music from Zak Claxton, Zak had a long history with Crystal sands and with a sad heart played them out:
"When I was first starting out playing live in SL, I'd get gigs here and there every so often. But I didn't really consider myself too committed to doing music in SL until I met Sandi Benelli in 2007. They had just opened Crystal Sands at the time, and came and saw me play a show at another venue on the recommendation of Grateful Stryker." He says on his blog.
