It is official, summer is gone, and autumn is here. Frankly, I like fall the best, and am kinda happy to see summer fade. I love seeing the colors of fall transform the view out my window, from a sea of green to the shades of all, the reds, orange and browns.

Also, I might as well announce it now, in case the faint of heart want to start packing now. Once the American Idol season starts up, I will be guest-blogging for my friend Rickey, the blogger with Rickey. Org, the site EW named the number one American Idol fansite the the second year running. I will have my impression of the performance and results shows within 30 minutes of their conclusion, and I will post them here and at Rickey's. I had written them for Rickey last season, and he recently asked me back for another season.

Also, have the latest CDs from Collective Soul and Mika, and hope to post some thoughts on them soon. Been a busy time, so still working on listening to both, coming up with my thoughts. Not as easy as it used to be...

Remembing 9-11

The Twin Towers

On September 11, 2001 I was working in Shelburne, Vermont, running a niche publication. I had gotten to work early that day, there was much work to do. By 9AM, I had received word from Erica, my friend who ran another department, about an accident at the World Trade Center. We had gotten close because she was from New York, and I had lived and worked in the City for almost 10 years, so we often spoke of our time there.

None of us in the office had TV access, but we were all on the internet. Erica was listening to internet radio news, and keeping us up on the facts. Then word of the second hit came, and it was an odd moment, filled with some fear, uncertainty, and memories.

In NYC, I started out working in the theater, and after four years left working Off Broadway and was working for a sound designer I had known, doing some work in the theater, but also doing some real estate slide shows and videos. Much of what we worked on was to sell and/or rent building space for the developers. One of the projects we did was for the opening of the opening for 2 World Financial Center, very near the site of 9-11.

The Twin Towers

It wasn't long before there were pictures and accounts found on the internet, pictures of the Twin Towers burning, the smoke billowing out and drifting over the city I spent a decade, working and living. The words terrorist attack were being used. Sure, being in the frozen tundra made me feel safe. After all, what terrorist attack would involve Vermont? But that feeling didn't last long. My family lived in Delaware, not all that far from Dover Air Force base, an important hub for the armed forces and certainly a potential target for terrorists. I needed to get in touch with family to make sure all was well.

I had a strange feeling, knowing I had worked so close to the site of the turmoil. My thoughts went to friends I still knew in NYC. They weren't people working in the financial district, but neither was I, yet I managed to spend time not far from the site.

Work had come to a virtual standstill, everyone in the offices digesting what was happening. Word of a plane crashing into the Pentagon certainly stoke our emotions. What was happening? What was coming next? the departments were huddling together, offering strength as we all focused on family and friends, even if none of us were directly affected. But there were people who thought of parents, others who had their children in their heart and mind, safe perhaps at school, but just wanting to hold them close.

Word came that air travel was shut down, and that a plane had gone down in Pennsylvania that was related to the attacks. The job of putting out a monthly magazine about horses seemed so small, so unimportant. We were preparing an issue to go to the world championship show in less than a month, running articles and advertisements for a show we didn't even know would take place at this time, and seemed so very superfluous.

The Executive Director called in to the office, and suggested we close the office and go home. It seemed like a good idea, and some left immediately. Others, including myself, felt a bit of paralysis set in, huddled with others listening to the reports, unable to make the move. But soon we did, going home to watch the coverage on television.

That only made it much more real. I sat on my sofa, with Timon at my side, bombarded by the sites and sounds of the reports. Buildings collapsed, papers flying, and smoke filling the air. I called home, making sure family was safe. No friends had been in the Financial district. All my loved ones were safe, but somehow, I didn't feel safe. Not that day.

Five months later, Barbra Streisand delivered a truly amazing tribute to commemorate those who lost their lives, loved ones, and a bit of the countries innocence and swagger. She went on the Grammy Awards and sang You'll Never Walk Alone. It was unannounced, and just beautiful.

God bless us, every one.

New Music - Casey Stratton - Memories & Photographs

OK, I am a complete dork. Soon as I got the Tweet that Casey Stratton's latest CD, Memories And Photographs, was available for download on Tuesday night, I went there to buy it. I saw the cover, and Casey looks cute as a nerdy button, and immediately loaded it onto the iPod so I could listen to it at work - great time for me to do just that, listen. Memories And Photographs has 14 tracks, with a running time over 70 minutes. Wow.

Highway is the opening song, a lovely love song, offering his strength to a lover. Just beautiful. It is followed up by Sea Change, an uptempo pop song about dealing with change. I just love the richness and depth of What If? The vocal control on I Fail Again takes the melancholy to another level. The Hundreth Time has a building urgency, accomplished with Casey's great vocals and a few additional instruments. Broken Sky has a fluid but languid feel, the ebb and flow of the ocean. The ending reminds me of the legend of the sirens of the sea. The Most Human Thing has an honesty, a truth so heartfelt. Slow Motion is anything but. It is full of movement, both emotional and thematic. Shut You Down might be my favorite track off the CD, the use of rhythms and cadence along with some spectacular vocals. When You Go explores the depth of emotion and loss. Love In Flames is a song with a depth of music, layers of sounds and meaning. Really love it! Coming Back For More has a plaintiff tone, not of sorrow, but of resignation, knowing your own fate. By the end, it moves from plaintiff to acceptance to strength. The joyousness of Time Will Melt Us Away is interesting. The final song, Done For, is a sweeping epic ballad, rich in tone and orchestration.

The collection is well named, for it gives the feeling we are walking through Casey's photo album, sharing in his life experience. Some songs offer snapshots of life, while others are vibrant memories being shared. Hell, sometimes I swear he was giving a tour of my own memories. There is a richness and depth to the music, layered and textured to serve the emotions.

The Pied Piper I Ain't & Other News

Corve, left, and Larry, right.

But somehow or another, I still manage to have people follow me. Or at least the blog. Since my last update, two more people have joined my soundtrack, and I continue to be grateful. There is Corve, a gorgeous 22-year-old who loves to read, write and listen to music, and is an aspiring model. You can check out his blog here. And there is also Larry_Ohio, who runs the blog Patently Queer. The blog has moved and has a great new layout, and you can check it out here. Welcome to the blog, and thanks for following it.

Speaking of the blog, this will be post #201, somewhat of a milestone. I wasn't sure I would be making it past the first week, so go figure! And by the time this posts, the blog will have made it past 9,200 hits, so thanks to all the visitors who have found my little corner of the 'net, and special thanks for those who have taken the time to post their thoughts. It is greatly appreciated.

In other news, Eric & The Adams have announced they will have a CD coming out by the end of the year, and are raising funds to make sure it happens. It is more than a donation, it is an investment paying returns. With each donation of $20 or more, you will get an autographed copy of the CD and be entered for a chance to win an iPod Touch! To offer your support, click here. You can also click on the 'Merch' tab at the top, and buy CDs [I have them all and can vouch for their greatness] or some fun t-shirts.

Speaking of Eric, he just completed his month of 'Free Cover Mondays' with 6 great cover songs. This batch included Use Somebody/Pokerface [Kings of Leon/Lady Gaga], Hometown Glory [Adele], I Believe [Blessid Union of Souls], Fast Car [Tracy Chapman], Bad Things [theme from True Blood by Jace Everett] and Somewhere Over The Rainbow [Judy Garland]. He managed to put his own particular twist on each song and I do love his style. The above video is a cover of Matt Nathanson's Come On Get Higher. I am still swooning every time I hear his cover of the Hoagy Carmichael classic Nearness of You. All you have to do is join the mailing list. And I bet if you ask him nicely, he might even share the link to the files. He's nice like that.

Speaking of new releases, Casey Stratton has a new one out called Memories & Photographs. I bought it and downloaded, so I hope to tell you how much I love it shortly. It's already on my iPod, primed to be played tomorrow!

And Tom Goss will be playing at Delaware Pride on September 19th. I am really looking forward to hearing him sing live, and will be hope to see blogger Mark In DE, who writes the Tales of a Sissy blog. To find out more about the Delaware Pride festival, click here.
