ACS gets ready for RFL in SL

American Cancer Society (ACS)
Meeting 30 January 2010
The ACS held a 'meet and greet' of their Relay For Life of Second Life PR/Marketing Committee, which is headed up by Poppy Zabelin (area Chair) and Breezy Carver (area Co-Chair), in preparation for their  annual fund raising efforts through Relay for Life (RFL).  Fundraising will begin in March and conclude with the annual RFL event in July.   Teams are currently being formed to participate in the July event.
Over the previous fundraising season, over $275,000 USD was raised to fund cancer research, education and prevention.   Distribution of funds can been seen at the ACS website blog http://cancer.blogs.com/international/ and the RFL official blog http://rflofsl.blogspot.com.  Additional information can be found at  http://twitter.com/RelayForLife_SL/.  The RL RFL community has recognized the SL RFL efforts, acknowledging that a lot of money was raised through SL.  Twelve to fifteen percent of the funds raised in SL go to support the International Relay for Life.  This year, notecards will be available for anyone wanting to see how the funds are distributed.  Out of 5,230 relays around the world, RFL in SL ranked 112th in 2009 for fundraising.
The overall aim of the PR/Marketing area committees is to REACH OUT!!!
Poppy gave an overview of the committee structure. Committee members include Beverly Hastings and Salem Draconia (Mission),  HollyJean Allen (Outreach), Nevar Lobo and Amethyst Starostin (International Relations),  Poppy Zabelin and Breezy Carver (Publicity/Media) with Saffia Widdershins as publicity advisor, IshtarAngel Micheline (Photography), Ren Stonecutter (Education) and May Rosebud (Greeters for RFL main event).
MamaP Beerbaum is the Event Co-Chair with overall  responsibility for teams, PR/Marketing, Technology and Security.

Teams will be responsible for advertising their own fundraising events.  An event board has been created for the teams to post their fundraising events.  The boards can be placed at different locations to get the word out about their events.
Nevar and Amethyst will be available to mentor and teach people from different countries in SL how to start teams, fund raise in their communities and spreading the word about  official events. They are building a team of ambassadors and translators and would like people with different language skils to volunteer to help. The Japanese and Ukraine communities have also become involved and ambassadors are in both of those countries.

A celebration of courage and caring!

On Sunday, October 11 starting at 11 am SL time there will be a fabulous MAKEOVER MAGIC fashion show on the American Cancer Society Island. Three cancer survivors and a caregiver, along with their fashion mentors, will display their new looks - shapes, skins, hair, clothing, AO's, and accessories. Please come and join us in this celebration of courage and caring!

MAKEOVER MAGIC is organized by volunteers from the American Cancer Society in Second Life and SL's Cancer Survivors Group and Caregivers Group, led by Cinders Vale. It is the Second Life equivalent of a real-life American Cancer Society program,Look Good...Feel Better - a nationwide, public service program in the USA to help cancer survivors to look good, improve their self-esteem, and manage their treatment and recovery with greater confidence. This year, 2009, is the 20th anniversary of LGFB which is now available in 19 countries around the globe ... and now, also, in Second Life.

Cinders explains: ‘We have adapted the ACS program to fit our virtual world. A virtual makeover will include everything from new shapes, skins, hair, clothing, AO's, accessories. Each participant will be assisted by two mentors, to find that new look that will be amazing.

This year Makeover Magic has been opened up also to cancer caregivers. Any cancer survivor will tell you just how important their caregivers are. Cancer caregivers deserve some pampering too’ says Cinders.

Participants

The three cancer survivors selected for this program are RebelMum Slade, Dwen Dooley, and BluesSweet Tomorrow, who will be modeling their new finery alongside caregiver Darcie55 Kraus.

ACS grand re-opening TODAY!

American Cancer Society Announces Grand Re-Opening of Second Life Island Office
Sunday November 2, 2008
The American Cancer Society announces the grand re-opening of the newly re-designed island in the virtual world. For several years, the American Cancer Society has existed in Second Life through its volunteers, Relay For Life event, and an island that served as a central meeting place for volunteers and avatars, of those who are affected by cancer.
Over the last several months, the island has been completely redesigned to meet the growing needs of cancer patients and American Cancer Society volunteers in Second Life. In 2008, the Relay For Life of Second Life volunteers raised over $200,000 USD which cumulated with an event that was attended by more than 2,000 avatars on 35 sims. The new American Cancer Society Island in Second Life will feature a "Hope Haven," a place where the cancer survivor support group can meet regularly and in private so they can share intimate information with each other to help cope with diagnoses and treatment, as well as provide comfort and support for one another.
The new Island will also feature a 4-story, two-tiered office building that will be dedicated to Relay For Life volunteers. Making Strides Against Breast Cancer volunteers, Island Greeter volunteers, and an Information Library. American Cancer Society pamphlets and brochures will provide information related to cancer prevention, treatment options, support and information will be available in the Information Library, as well as informative videos about the history of the American Cancer Society, cancer information, patient support programs, and Relay For Life information.
Visitors will arrive at the island at the Welcome Center, where a volunteer will be available at all times to greet and provide direction and/or information. The island will also feature a Memorial Garden to remember loved ones lost, 2 amphitheaters for large meetings, several smaller outdoor meeting areas, and a medium sized office space in a separate building. Events will begin at 9.30am SLT with an opening ceremony scheduled to begin at 10am SLT, from 9.30 on visitors will be entertained by the lively DJs at T1 Radio while wandering tours take place. There will be greeters stationed around the island to direct and answer any questions and explain the area visitors find themselves in.
At 10.00am SLT opening comments and thank yous will take place hosted by Stingray9798 Raymaker in the Southeast Amphitheatre.
11am will see the Survivors' Makeover/Fashion Show sponsored and supported by FACES with Cinders Vale, Poppy Zabelin and Serendipity Nerd followed by a closing speech from Stingray9798 Raymaker.
*Please see full schedule of events below.
The objective of the new design has been to provide visitors with a breathtaking view, peaceful atmosphere, and a comfortable place for volunteers and those seeking information to return as often as they like. "The American Cancer Society plans to utilize the virtual office no differently (in concept) than any other office in any other city," says Jeffrey Montegut, the American Cancer Society's Second Life Manager. "The same services that are offered in a real life office should be available to the Second Life community, because there are real people facing real issues behind each and every avatar. The American Cancer Society recognizes that, and fully supports our volunteers in Second Life."
