Coming soon

The Clothing Fair commitee is proud to announce the dates for Second Life's 4th Annual Clothing Fair benefitting Relay for Life.  Events are set to launch on Saturday, March 13th at 3pm slt and run 24/7 through Sunday, March 21, 2010 when the doors must close at 9pm SLT.

The Clothing Fair began as a dream three years ago with 34 stores participating in this event for Relay for Life. Since that date, it has grown to over 150 designers over 9 sims and has raised over 11 million Linden Dollars for RFL.

This year is no different.  Prepare to be immersed in 8 of the greatest "Fashion Cities of the World" surrounding a center sim patterned after the UN Sculpture Gardens containing sculptures from some of SL's most talented artists.

We have some of the cream of the crop coming together in the fashion world of Second Life bringing designs from all over the world to this virtual shopping experience. Each of these designers dedicate months of time getting ready for this event.  They are all committed to raising as much money for Relay for Life as possible.

This year we are again inviting the Live Musicians and DJ's of Second Life to join us. Covering 24/ 7 through-out the fair, fundraising, and letting us all know just what can be found through-out the 9 sims.

The Clothing Fair 2010 promises to be even better than ever, featuring:

Over 150 Clothing Designers

Live Music and DJ's to keep you entertained while you shop

St. Patrick's Day Party with RL Keltic Music performed by LabGraal

Photo Contest

Fashion Shows

Treasure Hunts

And Much Much More. ....

I have given away enough of their secrets. Once again, entry into the fair is free.   As the event draws closer, additional details will be announced on the official website: http://slrflclothingfair.blogspot.com/

Special thanks to the Clothing Fair Committee Members, SL- Newspaper , Royal Elite Magazine and the Builders who gave hours of time to this project: Melody Regent and her team from Regent Estates, Mermaidee Juliesse, Seri Writer , Kim Seifert , Viscount Menatep, Luna Barak,  Windyy Lane, Izzie Rexen, Tari Landar, and Grace Louden.

Builders wanted

Regent Estates has been asked to sponsor and build the New York build sim for the 2010 Clothing Fair benefitting Relay for Life.

There will be 9 sims in total, with the theme of " Fashion Cities of the World". It is our job to build, in full, the NYC sim. The Clothing Fair will play host to 130 of the top clothing designers from across Second Life.

There are 8 amazing cities and one United Nations, all coming together for one great cause. New York is one of these important sims and we are honored and thrilled to have been asked to participate in this great project.

The sim will be based on many of the current builds in our New York NYC, which has gained notoriety over the years for its tribute to the World Trade Center Towers and the tragedy of 9/11. Voted best Memorial in Second Life, we are honored to be able to give back to another worthy cause, the Relay for Life.

Included in the sim you will see the Lady herself, The Statue of Liberty, as well as the New York Library. Among other buildings planned are the Empire State Building and the famous Flatiron Building.

You may be asking yourself "why is Melody going into all this?" Well, I will say that our builders were so honored to be asked to be a part of this we couldn’t say no. But that is not the only reason: we decided to come to the community itself, and offer a way for some of you great builders to join in this worthy cause with us.

We are looking for 10 builders to join us in this endeavor. We want to offer a way for you, as a builder, not only to give back, but also to get your work out and seen by THOUSANDS of people over a 10 day period.

If you would like to be a part of this project, please continue for more information on what we need:

• NYC skyscraper style buildings
• Exterior footprint of 25x25M
• Interior space of 15 m deep x 25 m wide x 20m tall
• Minimum height of 70m
• Maximum height of 200m
• 200 prims or less (The fewer the better!!)
• No textures over 512x512 (256x256 is preferred)
• Mega prims are allowed but must be phantom
• Single front entrance
• Only the main floor must be functional – IE, no multiple floors needed
• Nothing scripted
• Completed build in a building rezzor (one can be provided if needed)
• Minimal sculpty use, if at all
• Must provide the finished build copy/mod to Melody Regent and the Relay for Life manager (to be named later)
• Interior must remain flat and neutral in color
• A full permissions copy of your logo or ‘name plate’ to be used for promotional use.

All builds must be turned in no later than January 30th. The sooner we get them, the better. You may replicate a RL building or come up with your own design. You are welcome to turn in as many entries as you wish, we will accept only the best of the designs for the limited space available.

When you turn in the build, please include a folder labeled “NYC Clothing Fair – (your name)”. In the folder we will need a copy/mod version of the building in a building rezzor, a landmark to your store/location (if available), Company logo and a notecard with any information you feel we need or about you and your company.

We will be announcing the names and store locations of all the builders that we use to the forums, in Prim Perfect and to our New York group with over 6000 members. You will also get a sign outside the build that honors you as the contributor.

We also have some ‘filler’ places available that need to be built. These are simple builds that will have nothing inside them. They are merely for looks and there to fill the space between buildings. If you want to contribute to these as well, please contact Melody Regent directly for more information.

We are thrilled to be involved in this worthy cause and to have you join us. If you have any questions at all, please send detailed questions to Melody Regent in world or email to MelodyRegent@gmail.com

Thank you again

Hair Fair 2009

On Sunday July 5, I heard about an event in Second Life that was just coming to a close: Hair Fair 2009. It’s a charity to raise cash for “Locks of Love,” an organization that gives free kid-sized wigs to children who have lost their hair to cancer and other illnesses, whose families cannot afford hairpieces to help the youths cope. It had been scheduled from June 20 to July 4th, but the buildings were still up some days after.

The fair covered four sims, the whole place looking like a candyland, which was the theme for the year. The landscape was dotted with both images of candies and chocolates, as well as having numerous prim ones around, with lollipops, cupcakes, and candycanes. Individual stores looked like gingerbread houses, pie slices, ice cream sundaes, etc. Sponsor Beta Technologies’ website stated more than 15,000 attended the charity over the two weeks it was officially open, visitors were kept track of by a metrics system, and had the goal of raising $12,000. Washu Zebrastripe and Mikayla Kohl were in charge of the fair with Sasy Scarborough as charity coordinator and Kia Goodliffe as designer liaison.

There was a wide variety of hairpieces, in various colors and styles, from simple long blonde hair to neon-pink mohawks to huge buns that would be impossible to wear in real life, and almost as difficult to describe. But there was more than just hair. There were also some other items, such as top hats.

A worthy cause with some sweet results.

Open the RFL Box with Dana

For anyone who has even glanced at the newspaper this week you can't fail to realise its Relay time and for those that feel we go a little over board at relay time then I apologise if you feel we are harping on one particular charity.
Indeed there are many fantastic charities in SecondLife and each and every one of them does an amazing job in raising awareness and supporting people in an environment that they feel comfortable in.
I have read and heard a lot that has worried me the last few weeks, with questions about the validity of charities in SL and people asking where and how the money raised is spent, each charity is different but each should be registered and no genuine charity will mind answering those questions. If you are in doubt look for confirmation and ask questions!
There have been some huge achievements made in fundraising thanks to the hard work of the people behind the scenes and I want to once again emphasize all the people on the committees and behind the scenes at events are voluntary -they give their time and effort for no reward and more often than not they are beaten and worn by the end of it, so please please consider how much it takes to organise such huge events and give a little love to those that make it happen!

On the Flip side is the amazing enthusiasm people have shown and the positive comments on the whole of relay. I can't wait to see what the rest of relay holds make sure you check the RFLinSL section to keep up with events around the grid.

The clothing fair continues until Sunday and thats where you will usually find me around the center sim (if you can keep me from shopping) and I wanted to let you all know that the RFL vendors in each store are the ones that automatically donate to RFL a lot of the designers may contribute some or all of their profits to RFL at the end of the fair BUT they are not allowed by ACS rules to say so, to be sure to support RFL buy from the purple and white vendors in each store!
If the Relay Raiders hit 5 Million lindens by Sunday Nevar Lobo, the fairs organiser, will have to wear silks for 15 days which right now are being created especially for him by Nicky Ree! so come and join us, enjoy the live music and the shopping, buy from the vendors and help us get those totals up!

See you at the fair everyone!

Babe and Eyeing Daligdig

While checking over the fair yesterday I happened to bump into Babe and Eyeing Daligdig the people responsible for bringing us the 9 sims hosting the clothing fair

Read the interview in the RFLinSL section

1 Million Lindens in 45 minutes!

Go Relay!
The map you see here was taken 15 minutes after opening the clothing fair yesterday and amazingly there were over 300 people on the 9 sims within that time.
While dancing away with DJ Dakota on the entertainment sim in the center the teams total hit 1 Million Lindens in donations the time was 10.45 am slt.

Please remember if you plan to visit the fair to check your Avatar rendering cost (ARC) by going to Advanced menu and selecting Rendering/Info Displays/Avatar Rendering Cost before you teleport in and try not to start at sim 1 as everyone is doing so and the sim is constantly full!

Also what would a pirate theme be without treasure? Hidden around the sims are 18 open treasure chests which are for sale at 10L$ more info can be found at http://slrflclothingfair.blogspot.com/

Exclusive first view of the 7 sins dresses

Last night James and I sat and talked to Nevar Lobo and Amethyst Starostin about this years Clothing fair benefitting RFL and these gorgeous gowns you can see here for the very first time.

Dana: Tell me about the idea of the 7 sins dresses and the pirate theme
Nevar Lobo: Well way back last year when we were talking about the fair we threw out ideas for themes and Haroldthe Burrel wanted to do the 7 sins.
JamesT Juno: So orginally the sims were to be themed around the 7 sins?
Amethyst Starostin: actually the first idea was the 7 wonders of the medieval world
Nevar: We never did anything with 7 sins untill later when Synergy (Devonshire) found the dresses, well the pictures for the dresses
Amethyst: and then we kept kicking stuff around over the summer
JamesT: so who chose pirates and why?
Amethyst: Well...when Pips Fetid was still the head of the build team...she and her team had kicked it around... the medieval builds we had in mind were very time consuming so they started to discuss other options and came up with pirates partially because the Raider's theme song is "Airship Pirates" by Abney Park...but I could be wrong about that reasoning
Nevar: When pips left because of Real LIfe .. we just stuck with the theme and it was at that time we went back to the pictures of the 7 deadly sins and decided we would do an auction
Amethyst: there was a song Harry (Haroldthe Burrel) kept referring to... "the Pirates and the 7 deadly sins" and that's how we tied it
Dana: The seven sins dresses can you tell me what they are about, who made them etc....
Nevar: seven deadly sins designs ..

wrath ... Raven Pennyfeather
sloth .... moxie polano
lust ... Paul Lapointe and Bastchild Lotus
envy .... swaffette firefly
vanity .... wiccan sojuorner
gluttony ... nicky ree
avarice... Lemania Indigo

Amethyst: The artwork these are based on is truly magnificent and have inspired some amazing creations from the designers.
We approached 7 designers to create an interpretation of the dresses in the paintings for a one of a kind auction benefitting RFL. Each dress is the only one, the winning bidders will be the only person to wear that gown
Dana: and its to be a silent auction?
Nevar: We are going to use an auction script like we use when we do our Art Auctions... so people will be able to come place their bids... names will not be known, however, the top bid will show then at 8pm slt on SUnday the 22nd after the last Fashion show we will announce the winners of the gowns

Dana: What has been the hardest part of setting up an event this size?
Nevar: For me its been getting everyone here at the fair ...and dealing with wanting to keep letting people in and not cut off the number of designers... every day i get someone else wanting to be a part of this event .. and its hard to say no
Amethyst: For me it has been trying to remind everyone this is a team effort and to work together for the big picture

Dana: How did you manage to get 9 sims?
Amethyst: Through the excitement of a couple of people that weren't afraid to dream big with us we originally planned 9, but couldn't make it happen, so we rethought it to 6 and then we met with Babe and Eyeing Daligdig and their enthusiasm was amazing within that hour we were realizing our dream of 9 sims!
Nevar: We have to thank Eyeing's RL company too , they help cover some of those sims ..

Dana: Tell me how it works: each sim is sponsored?
Nevar: The sponsorship pays for the tier of the sim ... all the sims are brand new brought online by Ohana land group. The donations of the advertising , the designers deposits and treasure hunts .. all those funds will go right to RFL
Dana: How did you find the sponsors?
Nevar: We had a couple of designers and other people tell us if you need help covering tier let us know we will pay for one so .. that is actually how the idea of sim sponsors came about we felt we needed to do something for those people to thank them
so then we sent out notecards about advertising and on there was a level for sim sponsors and that is how we found the rest of the sponsors.

JamesT: One of the criticisms heard often at big events is lag, what have you done to help that this year
Amethyst: we've been very cognizant of lag, we've kept the build prims to a minimum, small texture sizes and limited use of scripts and sculpties plus lots of natural decorations... creative use of water and land
Nevar: All i can do is hope that with the amount of prim that is open on the sims and the wide space of area we will have more flow to lessen the client side lag
People need to realize that when they come to events like this.. to Shop not to wear alot of prim .. take shoes off ... and remove ao's and huds... other people are shopping and honestly they dont care what you look like they are here for the designers good stuff.

Dana: where can readers find out about events happening at the fair?
Nevar: all events are being listed in the events under search also they can follow in the blog
http://slrflclothingfair.blogspot.com/
also through you and through the designer groups of the different designers who are here at the fair. The newpaper and the blog will be the most upto date info on the fair
Dana: what to you is the most important factor of the clothing fair?
Nevar: To me ... the most important factor is RFL ... and that is why this fair benefits RFL this is all about community and raising money to help find a cure for cancer ... Together we can
Amethyst: we do this in the hope that one life will be saved...so that no one has to lose the people they love to this disease

Amethyst: The theme for this year's Relay campaign is One World, One Hope... it's about embracing our diversity and coming together for a common cause.. and my prayer is...as people work this year on Relay... that they remember this is not about them...but something much bigger than they will ever be
Nevar: i have one thing to say that i need the readers to know ... when they are shopping through this event .... and look in the stores... There are RFL vendors .. .. buy stuff .from those vendors... do the treasure hunt and remember that it takes only 1 L to make a difference ... that Together we find a cure .... and that is my hope that in my lifetime we will find one
The fair opens monday at 10am slt we hope everyone is knocking the doors down when we open the sims.

Dana: is there anyone you would especially like to mention?
Nevar: I would like to give a very special thanks to Moxie Polano ... who did all these wonderful stores... To Eyeing and Babe Daligdig for the sims... to Viscount Menatep for his building and getting us these great ships... You and James... for the continued support and partnerrship on this event ...Every designer who participates and of course the Raiders. Timeless modeling agency and lastly .. my wife .. cuz wihtout her i would have lost it a long time ago
Amethyst: there were many people who gathered to make this a success...they all deserve a big round of applause
Nevar: Together we will find a cure !

RFL in SL

On Saturday RFL in SL kicks off their season of team events and each week you will find a full list of these events in our RFL section (the button is below the home button) which will include a list of events plus SLurls so you can go to any of the events being held.
RFL in SL is an amazing accomplishment and each year just grows and grows with your support.
Having been behind the scenes so much more this year I realise how much it actually takes to co-ordinate this massive effort and wish to thank every volunteer and team for helping to fight the global battle against cancer.

The biggest event of the season for us has always been the clothing fair and I will be spotlighting a lot of the 170 designers in the RFL section again this year so you get an idea of all the best designers.
The fair opens on Monday at 10am SLT click the posters around SL to get a list of SLURLs
We will be talking to designers and organisers, doing interviews and showing the best the Designers have created for this event!
The event this year only happened because of the generosity of Ohana Land, Dyldam and JC Design who stepped in with the offer of 9 sims to host the fair, without them we couldn't have had a fair, at least not on the scale it is, so a huge thank you to Eyeing and Babe Daligdig.
Nevar Lobo and Amethyst Starostin have worked tirelessly to get this event off the ground and it is set for an amazing week.
For the first time I have got to work with Moxie Polano too, a designer I have long admired for her styles at Haute Couture sim. Moxie has made all the maps you will see and the stores themselves and much more! - what an amazing builder!
Designing 9 sims to keep lag minimal and please 170 designers is not an easy task along with continuing her own business and designing one of the 7 sins dresses to be auctioned off during the fair, I will be asking Moxie about this soon! Watch this space!
For a sneak peak of how things are shaping up take a look at my Flickr HERE and join us Monday at 10am for the opening!
I will be taking the time to talk to all of the designers of the 7 sins dresses and sim sponsors during the following week, keep an eye on the RFL section for those interviews.
Go Relay!

RFL - Summer

Each Designer was given 300 prims and a bare structure to work with and, as shown by the examples, the designers really got into the spirit of the fair, Julia Soothsayer of Awesome Designs who won last years 'Best Designer' is a shining example of what can be achieved.

Take a look in the RFL section to see more examples both from Summer and spring and find out what's happening today at the fair.

Exclusive contest for sl-newspaper readers:

During the next few days you may find a strange code attached to the bottom of an article, IE: RFL012345, if you see this code you must go to the RFL clothing fair and find Nevar Lobo (hint, he can usually be found around the center but not always) and tell him this code in open chat.
If you are the first you will win a gift card donated by one of the many designers and sponsors of the fair!
Landmark to RFL fair:
(make sure you check all sections the code may not be on this page!)

RFL is HERE!

The Relay Raiders Clothing fair started last night at 10pm kicking off with a live concert by LabGraal (read more about them HERE)

Last week I was lucky enough to be one of the first to see the Rezzable sims as Pips Fetid worked to shape the land and began to build.

What she has accomplished is amazing to behold, from 4 flat barren wastelands has grown the 4 seasons with lovely walks and pathways to the huge stage structure in the center.
You walk through spring flowers and blossoms to the white snow covered trees of winter in a few short minutes. You can almost hear the crunch of leaves on the ground as you wander under the colourful canopies in Autumn and hear the birds singing as you wander through summers bright glory!

Shops line the avenues with each and every designer making the effort to blend their designs into the surroundings.

If you want to shop this week then this is the place to go.
4 sims dedicated to showing you the best SL has to offer and all in one place - why go anywhere else?
84 top designers coming together for one of the biggest charity events in the Metaverse.
Already within 4 hours of opening the grand total stood at 2.4 million Lindens

with the Relay Raiders totalling L$1,144,783

The support for this valiant effort is unbelievable and brings tears to the eyes of those who have worked so hard to make it happen, the 4 sims are almost constantly packed and yes there is LAG, yes you may lose your hair and not look great while you are there - but this isn't about how you look, its about showing your support for those that need it most. So take off those prims and SHOP til you drop. Each and every designer has come up with an outfit designed especially for the fair and 100% of the proceeds for these outfits go to Relay! SHOP SHOP SHOP!!!!!
Other clothing fairs come and go with their main goal to help themselves and promote themselves and their sponsors - Relay Raiders and RFL are all about the people and helping to Celebrate, remember and fight back! Can we honestly do any less?
Dana
P.s Don't forget to keep watching the RFL section I will be posting much more detail there
