Burning Life Opens

On Saturday October 17th at noon SL time, the Burning Life sims were opened to the general public of Second Life. From then until October 25th, there will be over 400 exhibits to view, with over a thousand residents involved in this major metaverse event. This massive nine day art show took almost two months to set up, and takes up three dozen sims. Burning Life 2009 is the seventh annual “virtual burn” in Second Life.

For those new to Burning Life, it is recommended you go to the Welcome Gate in the southeastern corner of the Hualapai sim and the southwestern corner of Deep Hole where a couple greeters will give you a notecard with some recommended places and answer any questions. There is also a Gate 2, and a Gate 3 available should the first be too crowded. Veteran “Burners” can simply drop in somewhere and once everything rezzes (which can take a while in the most detailed areas on older computers) start looking at the sites.

And this year, there is no shortage of things to see, and even interact with. One noteworthy exhibit I came across was the “History of Flight” by Windyy Lane. Stepping inside the “geode,” one is surrounded by a mesmerizing rainbow of colors, with creatures of some kind lazily flying in the air. One could get on them and dance, as well as port up to fly next to the huge silver bird flying over the geode.

Burning Life is inspired by the real life Burning Man art festival in the Black Rock Desert in California. Tens of thousands attend, and once it is over the exhibits are burned and everything cleaned up, “leave no trace.” Some of the Lindens had gone there before the making of Second Life, and have called it a partial inspiration for the making of it. Read more here.

For a list of exhibits, check out the Camp Directory. For special events, check the Events Listings.

“So what should you do and see? Well, ... that's entirely up to you.”

Relaxation

Whenever I see a holiday coming I run over to Corner of Revolving Time to see what I can find.
Many renowned creators and builders share their wares free of charge for those who come to the sim. I went there for Cinco de Mayo décor and found the owner Vickijo Rivera busy at work.
There was so much going on there!
We talked about all her new plans. The last time I was there the Corner was still a work in progress as she moved it to the new Relaxation sim.
Vickijo and her business partner and co owner of the sim, JohnJR Romano, look on this place as a place for the whole community. The free plants and décor are all there, but now, below the Corner there is a cave filled with more freebies, makeovers for new avatars, both men and women, and a section of wonderful clocks for sale.
I saw some lovely customized eyes for sale too.

The whole month of May is dedicated to the Relaxation sim opening with a big week of events. Right no
w R & R Zyngo is holding Grand Opening events, and are giving away 25k in freeplay !
The Razor Mall is having a huge sale this week also.
ClubRLC.com Network, has a special price for streaming that sl DJ’s will be interested in Vickijo took me for a tour and
showed me the new 7seas fishing areas where there will be custom fishes from many venues with some special fishing poles created by 7seas designer, Migizi North.
Right now there is a photo contest set up outside the Corner globe with a wonderful photo booth set up for the members use.
We wandered through the camping area for visitors where they can chose to play “Truth or Dare “. Newbies may join the group and chose to set The Corner as their home.
Don’t miss the Fantasy area which hovers above the sim . I love the sin
ging bowls there and it is truly relaxing.
Put these dates on your calendar: May 17 to May 23. This will be events week for the opening of the sim, There are many contests and giveaways planned. I got a peek at the free customized van decorated with the new Corner logo created just for that week.(one of the enticing freebies).
You do not want to pass t
his one up! The names of those designers who have contributed to the week are so numerous and I know you will want to participate. All around the sim you will find teleports to make your travel easier . You will be adding to your sl experience by visiting the refreshing sim. http://slurl.com/secondlife/Relaxation/90/166/42

"Tribute in Light: A 9-11 Memorial in SL (Cetus)

(CETUS) - As night falls in Cetus this Thursday, September 11, "Tribute in Light," a replica of the glowing light beams that shone in RL New York in 2004, will glow brightly in the skies over Cetus Gallery District during a 24-hour memorial event and fundraiser to honor the firefighters, police, and emergency workers who gave their lives or were injured in the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center in 2001.
The light towers were commissioned by Cetus founder Xander Ruttan, and constructed by Zachh Cale of Cetus-based Zachh Cale Gallery along with help from Supremious and Sensuous Maximus of SL's Builder's Brewery, based on the DIXON Perfect sim.
Interestingly, the 9-11 tribute isn't the only connection Cetus has with Ground Zero. The Beauchamp Building in Cetus, an iconographic structure due to its central location, height and distinctinctive bell tower reminiscent of the Smithsonian Castle in Washington, D.C., was conceived by Ruttan and built with a RL architect whose projects include rehabilitation of one of the buildings badly damaged when Tower 2 fell.
A daylong series of events will occur in Cetus to mark the 7th anniversary of 9-11.
For a complete lineup of the day's speakers and performers, contact event organizers. CONTACT: Hope McAlpine, any1 Gynoid, event organizers,

Nonprofit Commons Scavenger Hunt

I arrived at the Nonprofit Commons SIM to meet with MeRcEdEs Ochs, the head planner for the first ever Scavenger Hunt sponsored by the Nonprofit Commons group.
She'd sent me the TP request and greeted me as the site rezzed into view. We were at the main entry point. The signs displaying the names of the nonprofits that had offices here were the first to come into view.
I turned to find Merc, as she is called by friends, and saw her av begin to type.
"Hello Nazz, it's nice to finally meet you. Ronnie will be joining us momentarily. I've just offered her a TP." She Said
"Hello Merc, it is nice to finally meet avatar to avatar." I said smiling. "While we wait for Ronnie, we can chat a little about the scavenger hunt. Raising awareness seems to be a challenge for all organizations in SL, how well do you think this kind of event will promote nonprofit awareness in SL?" I asked.
"I think that it will increase awareness very well, because in order to find the clues for the hunt, participants will have to go into each nonprofit building. Hopefully the information in each will catch their eye and they will learn more. Also we will have free gifts in each nonprofit that will give information and a land mark ...so they may return to learn more." Ochs replied and then continued: "There will be note card givers in each participating organization, about twenty-five to thirty between both NPC SIM's."
As she spoke, Ronnie Rhode had arrived. Besides running the 'Garden for the Missing' nonprofit in SL, she is deeply involved with the NPC group. Hearing Merc's response she referred to two of the attractions that people can use when visiting the NPC SIM's. "One thing that I noticed is that the magic carpet and horse-drawn carriage do, when people ride them is they often see one or more nonprofits they want to learn about and when the ride is over, they go over there. This should serve in a similar manner." She said, and then continued: "I'll let Merc speak about the scavenger hunt, she led the team in planning out the event."
"I saw in the event poster that two different dates were listed. Is it one or two events?" I asked.
"The Scavenger Hunt begins on Friday Aug 22nd at 7pm PDT (SLT) with our opening Ceremonies and goes through to Sunday August 24th 8pm PDT (SLT). So it is one event spread over 3 days. We have musical acts planned for the opening and closing ceremonies. We've been working with Circe Broom to book the acts. Both Kim Seifert and Vincent Merricks will perform." Ochs said in reply and then continued: "The opening will of course be the start of the hunt and the closing ceremony is when the prizes will be awarded. We have tons of prizes, but the first prize is L$ 25,000, second prize is two Kiva.org gift certificates and we have various other prizes that have been donated including gift certificates to shops in SL."
"Can you tell me how the hunt will work?" I asked.
"Well, the scavengers will have teams of one or two people. The clues as I said are hidden in various nonprofits on both NPC SIM's. The idea is to have the clues well hidden inside the buildings to get people inside to learn more. The hunters will then have to hunt throughout second life to find the answers to the clues and take snapshots of themselves with the answers. So the team that gets all of the snapshots back to me or Coughran Mayo first will win first prize and so on until we run out of prizes. We are hoping to have enough to be able to give everyone a prize." Ochs said. I asked if she and Coughran were to be the contest judges and she replied, "Yes, but I have a group of wonderful friends who are supporting me on this adventure."
I commented that it would be a busy weekend for them both.
She replied. "Yes it sure will be."
"Merc has been working on this for a couple of months, so the credit is all hers truly. Coughran did the main design and Merc is the executioner." Ronnie said smiling.
"Yes very true ... but Ronnie and Coughran have been my main supports on this ... guiding me through what I didn't know." Ochs chimed in.
I thanked both ladies for their time and told that I thought it would be a great event and wished them success before TP'ing back home to start writing their story.

Relay For Life Prom

On the weekend of June 14 & 15, SL residents will be given a chance to step back in time to relive the classic American high school prom in a totally immersive setting—set in the middle of 4 islands of over262,144m2, complete with car shop, working classrooms, chalkboards, offices, libraries, gym, locker rooms, shower and lav, and virtually every detail you can think of. This memory lane-invoking high school is built by CaSimone Aquitaine, who owns the Second Life designer store Topaz Square and has a background in engineering in RL. Inciting her inspiration and drive, she recounts the moving story of her friend Marianne Thompson, dearly known as "Mickey", who passed away due to lymphoma, but did not get the chance to attend her high school prom, "I had no clue why this build was so important to me, and in my tears I finally knew there was a purpose to what seemed a state of creative madness."
For more details on this event, please contact TigerLily Koi, CaSimone Aquitaine, or Ina Centaur
