Builders wanted

Regent Estates has been asked to sponsor and build the New York build sim for the 2010 Clothing Fair benefitting Relay for Life.

There will be 9 sims in total, with the theme of " Fashion Cities of the World". It is our job to build, in full, the NYC sim. The Clothing Fair will play host to 130 of the top clothing designers from across Second Life.

There are 8 amazing cities and one United Nations, all coming together for one great cause. New York is one of these important sims and we are honored and thrilled to have been asked to participate in this great project.

The sim will be based on many of the current builds in our New York NYC, which has gained notoriety over the years for its tribute to the World Trade Center Towers and the tragedy of 9/11. Voted best Memorial in Second Life, we are honored to be able to give back to another worthy cause, the Relay for Life.

Included in the sim you will see the Lady herself, The Statue of Liberty, as well as the New York Library. Among other buildings planned are the Empire State Building and the famous Flatiron Building.

You may be asking yourself "why is Melody going into all this?" Well, I will say that our builders were so honored to be asked to be a part of this we couldn’t say no. But that is not the only reason: we decided to come to the community itself, and offer a way for some of you great builders to join in this worthy cause with us.

We are looking for 10 builders to join us in this endeavor. We want to offer a way for you, as a builder, not only to give back, but also to get your work out and seen by THOUSANDS of people over a 10 day period.

If you would like to be a part of this project, please continue for more information on what we need:

• NYC skyscraper style buildings
• Exterior footprint of 25x25M
• Interior space of 15 m deep x 25 m wide x 20m tall
• Minimum height of 70m
• Maximum height of 200m
• 200 prims or less (The fewer the better!!)
• No textures over 512x512 (256x256 is preferred)
• Mega prims are allowed but must be phantom
• Single front entrance
• Only the main floor must be functional – IE, no multiple floors needed
• Nothing scripted
• Completed build in a building rezzor (one can be provided if needed)
• Minimal sculpty use, if at all
• Must provide the finished build copy/mod to Melody Regent and the Relay for Life manager (to be named later)
• Interior must remain flat and neutral in color
• A full permissions copy of your logo or ‘name plate’ to be used for promotional use.

All builds must be turned in no later than January 30th. The sooner we get them, the better. You may replicate a RL building or come up with your own design. You are welcome to turn in as many entries as you wish, we will accept only the best of the designs for the limited space available.

When you turn in the build, please include a folder labeled “NYC Clothing Fair – (your name)”. In the folder we will need a copy/mod version of the building in a building rezzor, a landmark to your store/location (if available), Company logo and a notecard with any information you feel we need or about you and your company.

We will be announcing the names and store locations of all the builders that we use to the forums, in Prim Perfect and to our New York group with over 6000 members. You will also get a sign outside the build that honors you as the contributor.

We also have some ‘filler’ places available that need to be built. These are simple builds that will have nothing inside them. They are merely for looks and there to fill the space between buildings. If you want to contribute to these as well, please contact Melody Regent directly for more information.

We are thrilled to be involved in this worthy cause and to have you join us. If you have any questions at all, please send detailed questions to Melody Regent in world or email to MelodyRegent@gmail.com

Thank you again

Holiday Happenings at M&M Creations

I had heard some interesting events were planned at M&M Creations for the holiday season.  A visit there recently revealed a unique shopping experience.  They offer  a variety of items for landscaping, as well as sculpties and items ranging from lanterns, furniture, gazebos and animals.  The creative people behind M&M Creations are 10 and Marcthur Goosson.
At the M&M Highlands, 10 and Marc have created a spectacular Mystic Winterland.
I recently  met with 10 and Marcthur at their main store in a cozy wintery sitting area.
SS:    So I understand you have big plans for the holidays, including treasure hunts. Tell me about some of the other things you are planning.
10G:   Well, full of plans, hopefully they (will) all be worked out and become a success.  First we wanted to do something like we did last year, discounts on the boxes with sculpties, but to focus only on the sculpts while we have much more to offer is a pity.
SS:  Yes, I agree.
MG:  Yes , soo much more (to) us.
SS:  What kinds of goodies can be had at the treasure hunts?
10G:   In the hope our visitors will take their time to see the island, I planned to have a kind of treasure-hunt by making 2 items each day for sale for 1 linden.. only they will stay on their original place and people have to start walking.
SS: Yes, that's what I heard...it sounds like a good plan.
10G:  Trees, lights or lanterns....gazebos, maybe even animals, flowers, shrubs...particles, (cacti)...do i need to go on?
SS: It sounds like a lot.
10G  Oh, books not to forget those.
SS:   And this is kicking off on the 11th?
MG:  Yes together with my birthday which (is) also the 11th:-)
10G:   Next to that we fill the gift box at the X-mas plateau every day with another gift, an item from our shops around the main store.
MG: LOL never coincidences.
10G:  That's no treasure or discounted, but just a gift like gifts should be, for free...and to see what can be created with (fashion) sculpties, not only fashion!!
SS:  And hopefully come back with their friends.  It's a great opportunity for people to get a sample of what is available here.
MG:  We are working hard, but SL has grown soo huge that it is difficult to get the right attention.
SS:  I can understand that Marcthur.
MG:  Marc is ok ;-)
SS:   Good, thanks, Marc, easier to type lol.
SS:   SL is almost overwhelming in what is available here.
10G:  Of course,, we focus mainly on fashion-designers, but it would be boring for us, we simply do not fashion-design, we have the resources for the designers, and the rest is 'having fun with sculpties'.
MG:  What 10 says is that we supply sculpties for fashion designers, but our inspiration let us make many more be.
SS:  Did you begin with that idea when you started out? I mean, the fashion end of it?  I know nothing about fashion design here, but I imagine the sculpies help to make the various pieces of an outfit?
MG:  Yes, indeed.  We started out  with scenery screens.
SS:   Yes, sculpties would be helpful in landscape too
MG:  And then sculpties arrived which finally gave me an opportunity in RL to make designs in 3D.
SS: That must have been exciting for you :)
10G: (and so it grew and grew and grew)
MG:  Exciting YES, and many many hours experimenting :-)
10G:  Out of making, building with and selling sculpties grew the questions for explanation or workshops, so tutorials have become a part of my sl-fun.  Hopefully I will do some more next year.
SS:  I'm sure it could not have grown without your creative input and ideas
10G:  I'm happy the pc's are still indoors and the windows aren't broken hahaha.
MG:  And of course with the help of so many creative minds here in SL,
SS:  Yes, there is a lot of creativity in SL.
10G:  That's why we would like to thank all our friends, costumers, designers , they made this all happen and possible as well.
SS:  What sets M&M Creations apart from other shops in SL?
MG:  Quality for sure, and we offer FULL PERM sculpties...and variety, originality.
10G: Quality.
SS:  Full perm, a very nice feature.
MG:  And shapes that put other creative minds into work.  Others are inspired by us, to make stuff with our shapes they never thought of, and customers are free to inspire us with their ideas.
10G: And we're helpfull, but that's a common thing I noticed last year.
SS:  Do you feel that others are in a sense taking your ideas?
MG:  Sure we are copied.
S S:  I guess there is a lot of that in SL.
MG:  But it is ok when others are inspired.
SS:  It seems like you manage to remain unique, however.
MG:  We are unique in our kind of way,  we have our own identity.
SS:  The trick is keeping it Marc :)
MG:  Hahaha, well, so far so good.
10G:  That's why we don't explore entire SL like most do.  We never go out looking for others or our competition, so we will stay that way I guess.
MG:  I hardly ever explore SL.  I visit my customers .
SS:  I do not do a lot of exploring either, unless I have a purpose to go somewhere.
MG:  Well as a jouralist you should :-)

SS:   Things tend to fall into my lap.
MG:  That is a good phrase.
SS:  Hahaha, I am lucky I suppose.
10G:  If we would explore sl we (would) find too much realistic places and it will 'kill' our creativity and own identity in what we do.
10 and Marcthur are a RL couple also affectionately referred to as M&M.  Their work in SL is their daily RL work.  I found them both to be very creative, interesting and intelligent.  Their combined talent is amazing.  I would encourage all to participate in their scheduled hunts beginning on the 11th.  Further details are provided below.
Every day another  FREE gift-in-a-box with an M&M Creation can be found on the X-mas tree-plateau in the middle of the  Main Store and TP point in a special M&M GiftBox.  Also every day, another SCULPTY BOX  created by Marcthur Goosson with a discount from 10%-50%!!!  These can be found underneath the tiny X-mas tree standing on the box itself at the Main Store!!
Additional promotions include 2 creations of M&M Trees & Landscaping for sale for 1 linden .  Those landscaping-items can be found outside the mainstore at the Natural Park, they will change EVERY DAY!
You need to walk around and click items (such as trees, flowers, lanterns, entrees, shrubs, furniture, gazebos, animals, et.) to find the ' Treasures of the Day'.  MAYBE look out for a tiny X-mas tree which could be found near the Treasures.

Tanglewood City Skymall’s Grand Reopening Celebration

Second Life has many malls, but how many can boast having their own sky-high waterslide?

On Thursday June the 11th, the Tanglewood City Skymall will have it’s Grand Reopening Ceremony. The event will last from one minute in the morning after Midnight to 2 AM Friday the next day. The mall will have numerous attractions. “It’s a mall with hand picked designers,” Skymall manager Kaii Kiranov explained, “We will be having 26 hours of DJ or live music. And the main event will be the Cher and Carm Show, broadcasting live from the skymall from 2pm to 4pm SL time. Lots of other stuff too, like a treasure hunt, prize giveaways, and more.”

“Oh and there is the 250 foot high waterslide in the mall. Hee-hee.”

Kaii explained the owner of the mall, Defbiggiec Gagliano, had owned another previously, and built the place to correct what he saw as shortcomings in the old mall. Here, “he made the stores much bigger for lots of shopping room, and he created his plans around catering to designers. That is number one here. We hand-picked and invited everyone here. First, they had to be way above average in their work. Second, they had to be really nice people. So, it took a long time to find these designers. ... For example, Gaia Phoenix and Rita Groshomme from Curio ... this is a really big deal that Gaia put her whole line of skins in our mall.” They also sell the Twisted Titlers seen at parties, “The picture of me and my twin sis was taken by Phia from Twisted and Spoiled for a poster she did for the fur coat in the picture. She told us we could use it for our shop.”

The Skymall is appropriately named, 300 feet in the air. It has three floors, curved rampways allow access to one another. Much of the upper two floors are see-through grillwork, while the bottom floor has a transparent center to allow a view below. There are a few Relay for Life posts, and XstreetSL exchange terminals, as well as Metaverse Exchange their newest competitor, “going through beta testing right now.”

Kaii explained that the designers even have a say in what rent levels were, “Defbiggiec Gagliano tried to think of everything he could to make this mall cater to the designers here. ... Every shop has a Landmark lot that they can use to TP customers directly to the front of their shops. ... very few malls, let alone skymalls make arrangements for direct TPs to each store.”

“On the shoppers side, they can rez what they buy anywhere in the mall. There is a huge shopping area in each store to make camera use easy. We advertise the first and third levels separately, and they each have their own Landing Zone. We also do what we call Dance Shopping Rave Parties in the stores themselves to get customers in front of the merchandise. ... We do ask designers to support our efforts in anyway they feel motivated to do. We want to draw them to participate, not require it. They only have to do one thing, that is list their (store) in SL Search.”

Regan Becloud, the owner of the Artists’ Lounge Cafe, explained that Defbiggiec had started small, buying just, “a little bit of the land on the sim. Then more, and more, and more. And soon, we owned 2/3 of it.” Defbiggiec eventually bought the rest. ”He had this fabulous idea to make the skymall, became his pet project. Originally, there was not going to be a waterslide. He was making a track up there for bikers. And I had been hoping to get bike shops in the mall, maybe with demo bikes people could ride on the track. However, while it sounded awesome, it didn’t work so well. You’d go shooting in the air, and crash into the ground below. Def got POed, and we got a waterslide instead.”

The beginning of the waterslide ride is way up over the mall, 550 feet in the air. The easiest way to get there is a teleport on the mall’s first floor. To go down the slide, one clicks on the small red ball at the entry, and when an inner tube appears sit on it and go down. Gravity then takes care of the rest as you sloosh downwards. One may get stuck while going down, but all one has to do is nudge the tube left or right. The trip ends at the mall’s first floor, where one can TP back up to start all over again, or “stay in the tube for a spirited game of bumper tubes with your friends.”

Regan then explained how her cafe came to be, “I was telling Def ... about how I had gone to a cafe and how in real life I want to open a cafe for the arts. *Not a club,* a cafe, to hold poetry readings, have live music, comedians, filled with books people can read, good coffee, and some interesting snacks, filled with artistic, open-minded individuals. And how that would be cool to have in Second Life. So he said, ‘Go for it Regan,’ and I made the Cafe. That is my baby, and everything there goes through me, just so ya know. Hee-hee.”

The Skymall will also have a movie showing at a temporary theater. And not just any movie. The Tanglewood City Movie Theater, sponsored by Dream Garden, will be showing the Rocky Horror Picture Show from 7 to 9 PM SL time, hosted by Roguewolf Vollmar. “The movie will have a synchro-start at 7:15 sharp,” Roguewolf explained in a notecard, “so don't come late and miss the Time Warp! We encourage audience participation from all so break out those rice emitters and noisemakers and all things associated with this cult classic.” In avatar, Rougewolf had this to say, “Well, when we have hosted the movie before in a club, it was well received as many had not seen it, and many (who) have, we could emote for those and give a very real ... experience in Second Life. And many bring props they have themselves to the show.” Several prizes will be given out to some random viewers.

SL Shakespeare Company’s Twelfth Night, Act 1 Photography Contest on Koinup

Shakespeare, Second Life and Brescia, Italy: The SL Shakespeare Company joins forces with Koinup to launch the world’s first major photography contest featuring a professional theatrical production based entirely in the virtual world of Second Life. Starting March 1, the contest invites participants to attend the SL Shakespeare Company’s open-ended run of Twelfth Night, Act 1 and take photos. Over L$100,000 in prizes will be awarded to the winners.

The contest consists of a main contest whose final submissions deadline is June 15, 2009. Several mini-contests with weekly or bi-monthly deadlines and prizes will be held starting in April. These mini-contests will be held in conjunction with several “Variations” on the open-ended run, where, for example, an all-female or switched-genders cast interpretation is tried.

To give all participants a chance, the contest introduces a special “Unedited SL Photography” category with its own exclusive prize.

The contest also has a special Avatar Photography category for photography that focus particularly on actor avatars. To help facilitate this specialized component, the SL Shakespeare Company will be holding special actor avatar photography sessions starting in April.

In efforts to recognize photography based not only on artistic merit but also on their appeal to different people, the contest will be judged by a panel of well-known Second Life residents from several different arenas. Judges include Ananda Valeeva, AM Radio, Beyers Sellers, Eshi Otawara, Frolic Mills, Ina Centaur, Jaymes Kjeller, Prad Prathivi, Rightasrain Rimbaud, Sarah Nerd, Tara05 Oh, Vint Falken, Verde Otaared, and others.

Shows occur weekly on Sundays at 1 PM PST and Tuesdays at 6 PM PST at the SL Globe Theatre. Performances are free except for shows on the last Tuesday and Sunday of each month. Donations are gratefully accepted.

About Twelfth Night, Act 1

Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night is the story of a shipwrecked girl named Viola, who chooses to go incognito as a boy eunuch. Act 1 establishes the love triangle that Viola, Duke Orsino, and Olivia become entangled in, and also introduces some of Shakespeare’s most memorable characters—Malvolio and Feste. Unlike the Bard’s other plays, Twelfth Night exists only in the folio editions.

800,000L Viewer Interface Contest

"I am inviting the creative, brilliant, thoughtful, insightful community of SL to submit designs for a new Second Life client. We can call it a “newbie viewer” or a “junior client” - whatever terms you want to give"

With the problems seen with the new 'Dazzle' user interface this contest is a breath of fresh air, run by Dusan Writer, this gives us a chance to show how we would design the UI, maybe a simplified version for casual visitors or those coming for just a short period with the ability to upgrade at a later date.
The designs will be judged and the top 10 will go through to a presentation of their ideas - you don't have to make it, or code it, just show how it could and explain your rationale.

- Submit no later than 11:59 PM (2359hrs) SL time June 29, 2008
- Announcement of finalists: July 6th
- Presentation by finalists to judging panel: July 12th
- Winners announced: July 14th

See Dusan Writers blog for full contest details and rules.

Dusan states the reasons for doing this:
"I’m doing this for a bunch of reasons. First…I don’t believe we should just rely on the Lindens, we’ve talked about this a lot, and it’s time to see what the people who put the meaning behind “Your World, Your Imagination” can come up with. I’m sure the Lindens are looking at similar ideas, but would also appreciate a wider dialog in the community.
It would be NICE if the Lindens or someone picked up on some of the ideas and discussion that this might generate. If not them, maybe the OpenSim people - whoever, the important thing, I believe, is to bring a discussion about the viewer into the open, and sometimes the best way to do that is to put a few Lindens (um, the currency not the people, I have no intention of cooking the Lindens) into the pot to make it interesting.
I don’t really want to develop a viewer. I have no particular incentive to do so. It’s not to say I WON’T….I might be willing to, I think it could be both a headache and a blast. I DO have an interest in seeing more people come to SL, even for a one-off event…and stay. And I think offering a simple viewer - one say that students might use, or schools, or just some casual surfer who wants to try a “simple SL”. It’s good for all of us.
And finally, I think it’s a great way to hear from people who can do this kind of thing because I like to meet people with this kind of talent. Hey, I talk a good game, but that doesn’t mean I know how to DO much of anything. I like meeting people who know how to do stuff."

If you are design inclined take a look, it could be worth a lot of Lindens but more than that, we could get a simple newbie friendly UI that would be much easier for new visitors to SecondLife.

Drama at JCNY contest: we tell both sides

On Tuesday I received a strange story, now this does happen but we don't always print them. This however was well written and expressed one side of a story, so I did what any reporter would do I contacted the other side to get the full picture. One thing I do wish emphasized is that none of this is written by me, I will not print the whole story but will try to show both sides, even after being accused of writing it, I still wish to be fair:

Shamu Kidd began his SL retail career by opening his Desiree's boutique a little over a year ago. Now with 8 desigers to choose from, Shamu has used his 12+ years experience in RL retail industry to offer a great selection to his valued SL clients, but owning a succesfull store is not the only thing Shamu is up to. Believing designers should be allowed to concentrate on what's important and the most fun for them...designing, he is allowing others to take advantage of his RL experience and has started offering his services as a retail manager. Los Texanos will be the first to take advantage of his new service, Shamu will be running the day-to-day retail operations for the group.
Being facinated with Machinima as well, Shamu has also partnered with Rusty Miles and Tocho Cortes to help expand Second Life Media Source ( www.slmediasource.com ). SLMS gives the user a portal into the creativity and complexity that is Second Life. With videos, tutorials, photos and more, we want to help enhance their metaverse experience and help make it one of quality, enjoyment, and enlightenment.
