ACS gets ready for RFL in SL

American Cancer Society (ACS)
Meeting 30 January 2010
The ACS held a 'meet and greet' of their Relay For Life of Second Life PR/Marketing Committee, which is headed up by Poppy Zabelin (area Chair) and Breezy Carver (area Co-Chair), in preparation for their  annual fund raising efforts through Relay for Life (RFL).  Fundraising will begin in March and conclude with the annual RFL event in July.   Teams are currently being formed to participate in the July event.
Over the previous fundraising season, over $275,000 USD was raised to fund cancer research, education and prevention.   Distribution of funds can been seen at the ACS website blog http://cancer.blogs.com/international/ and the RFL official blog http://rflofsl.blogspot.com.  Additional information can be found at  http://twitter.com/RelayForLife_SL/.  The RL RFL community has recognized the SL RFL efforts, acknowledging that a lot of money was raised through SL.  Twelve to fifteen percent of the funds raised in SL go to support the International Relay for Life.  This year, notecards will be available for anyone wanting to see how the funds are distributed.  Out of 5,230 relays around the world, RFL in SL ranked 112th in 2009 for fundraising.
The overall aim of the PR/Marketing area committees is to REACH OUT!!!
Poppy gave an overview of the committee structure. Committee members include Beverly Hastings and Salem Draconia (Mission),  HollyJean Allen (Outreach), Nevar Lobo and Amethyst Starostin (International Relations),  Poppy Zabelin and Breezy Carver (Publicity/Media) with Saffia Widdershins as publicity advisor, IshtarAngel Micheline (Photography), Ren Stonecutter (Education) and May Rosebud (Greeters for RFL main event).
MamaP Beerbaum is the Event Co-Chair with overall  responsibility for teams, PR/Marketing, Technology and Security.

Teams will be responsible for advertising their own fundraising events.  An event board has been created for the teams to post their fundraising events.  The boards can be placed at different locations to get the word out about their events.
Nevar and Amethyst will be available to mentor and teach people from different countries in SL how to start teams, fund raise in their communities and spreading the word about  official events. They are building a team of ambassadors and translators and would like people with different language skils to volunteer to help. The Japanese and Ukraine communities have also become involved and ambassadors are in both of those countries.

Please come and join us in this celebration of courage and caring!

MAKEOVER MAGIC is organized by volunteers from the American Cancer Society in Second Life and SL's Cancer Survivors Group and Caregivers Group, led by Cinders Vale. It is the Second Life equivalent of a real-life American Cancer Society program,Look Good...Feel Better - a nationwide, public service program in the USA to help cancer survivors to look good, improve their self-esteem, and manage their treatment and recovery with greater confidence. This year, 2009, is the 20th anniversary of LGFB which is now available in 19 countries around the globe ... and now, also, in Second Life.

Cinders explains: ‘We have adapted the ACS program to fit our virtual world. A virtual makeover will include everything from new shapes, skins, hair, clothing, AO's, accessories. Each participant will be assisted by two mentors, to find that new look that will be amazing.

Relay for Life of Second Life shatters records, raises over US$270,000 to fight cancer

RELAY FOR LIFE, the signature fundraising event of the American Cancer Society, closed
its fifth and most successful annual event in Second Life on Sunday, July 19 having raised
over a quarter of a million US dollars in support of cancer research. With donations still
coming in, that figure is already over $270,000 US and it looks as if the final total will easily
surpass that by the end of July.
This year’s Relay had the theme of ‘One World, One Hope’ and was the largest to date, with
a track lined by luminaria winding through 37 sims of amazing builds - some specially
created by designers, and some built by the teams themselves. More than 1,900 avatars
completed one or more laps, a combined total of 2,155 laps, while others chose to visit
the campsites, where they could teleport to a space station from the survivors’ moon camp,
visit the Mars base, cycle around the Tour de France, zap cancer cells in the Anatomica
build, take a ride through the breast cancer rollercoaster, explore The Shire – home of the
hobbits - rest on the lovely Tranquility beach, or attend one of the music events on the
entertainment sims. There was also a lovingly built replica of the Charleston, SC Hope
Lodge. Avatars gathered outside Hope Lodge wearing purple capes, and pledging to ‘Fight
Back’, in a moving ceremony. And 5,370 luminaria were lit in support of loved ones going
through treatment, and in memory of those heroes who have passed on.
Stingray9798 Raymaker (the avatar of the official ACS representative in Second Life,
Jeffrey Montegut) drew attention to some of the new features of this year’s event: ‘This
year marked the first year that we held the Relay for Life of Second Life Teen Edition (a teen
relay was held from Friday to Saturday) which means we actually relayed for 48 hours,
straight.’ He went on: ‘Particularly important this year was that the American Cancer
Society’s ‘mission’ and the ‘international’ aspect of Relay were fused into almost every
aspect of the event.’
Fayandria Foley, who is stepping down as Relay for Life of Second Life Event Chair after
four very successful years – three as Event Chair – said: ‘This was our largest and most
successful Relay ever. We have put Relay for Life of Second Life on the map not only in
Second Life but also in real life.’ She continued: ‘Gwinnett County Relay For Life (one of the
largest perennial events in the USA, with more than 6,000 participants raising more than one
million US dollars – ed.) may be the biggest Relay for Life and the largest money maker in
real life but ... they don't have participants from over 26 different countries, a survivor camp
on the moon, a roller coaster, or sailing activities, they don’t have tinies and furries, they
don't have the ability to fly and to teleport from one side of the track to the other, and above
all they don’t have you! WE are truly One World!’
This past weekend’s Relay For Life of Second Life also set a new listener record for
T1Radio, the Relay's Official Broadcaster, which reported that this was its biggest weekend
ever!
According to Trader1 Whiplash, the station recorded more than 6,000 unique IP
addresses logged to T1Radio on July 18-19 combined. ‘I knew right away this was going
to be a huge weekend. By the time we began the opening ceremony we had more than 600
listeners showing on our board’ said Trader.
A record number of teams took part this year with 130 teams listed, ranging from two to 400
people per team, by the time of the Opening Ceremony. For MamaP Beerbaum, Chair of
the Teams Committee, it was an extraordinary experience. ‘When I was asked if I wanted to
Chair the Teams Committee, I hesitated, because I had been a team captain the previous
year, and that was what I so loved about Relay ... the team experience. I knew if I said ‘yes’
that I could not do that anymore. Well, I am glad I decided to take the leap. Instead of
working with ONE team, I got to work with EACH of the teams, to talk to hundreds of you, to
share your plans, your dreams, your heartache, your passion, your ups and downs, your
kindness, your caring ... It has been my privilege and honor to relay with each and every one
of you.’
Cinders Vale, the avatar of a breast cancer survivor in Washington State, USA, says: ‘This
was my third year, and this year I took a more active part in volunteering. Being part of Relay
with so many others was beyond what I thought it would be. I can’t wait to get started for
2010!’ Cinders was Co-Chair of the Survivors/Caregivers Committee which organized the
opening lap when survivors and caregivers take to the track. According to Cinders, 135
survivors and caregivers were registered in advance for the opening lap and an estimated
150 avatars took part, setting another record.
Poppy Zabelin of the new International Relations committee said: ’Coming from two
European countries - I am originally from the UK and I spend part of my time there and part
of my time on Holland which are BOTH International Relay countries - I immediately saw the
theme of this year’s Relay as an opportunity to help to put Relay on the map as a truly
international, global, event which is now licenced to 20 countries outside the USA. Here
though there’s one crucial difference: we all walk the same track.’ She went on: ‘By the
close of Relay I had counted participants from a record 31 countries and made many new
friends. It was awesome to see so many flags around the starting sim and to be holding
hands with so many people across the globe.’
As incoming Event Chair for 2010, Tayzia Abattoir, pointed out at the Closing Ceremony, it
is impossible to touch on all those who contributed their time and skills and thank them all
individually.
‘From the American Cancer Society Representative, Jeff Montegut, to the Event Chair and
Co Chairs, and all of the Committee members, those making sure the main event runs
smoothly, others making the awards, the t-shirts, luminaries, the kiosks, taking care of PR
and spreading the word, mission integrity, international relations, greeters, mentors, radio
stations, publications that give us free space, musicians that provide free events, assistance
from the in-world ACS support groups, and so much more, there are so many things that so
many people do, I just can’t possibly touch on all of them or I will be talking forever.
‘From everything that goes on behind the scenes, to the captains and teams. Without you,
we would not have a Relay. You are the blood that runs through the Relay veins, who have
raised over a quarter million dollars for our 2009 campaign alone, and in today’s economy
that speaks loudly about the caring, giving community that Second Life is and of our Relay
for Life family here.’
She closed by saying: ‘I am honored to be a member of this family and look forward to
guiding Relay for Life of Second Life next year as the Event Chair, but I look forward even
more to the day when there is a cure so that we can just gather as friends without the worry
of cancer.’
Some of the Committee are already looking ahead. Technical Chair ZenMondo Wormser
who stepped in at a crucial time to recover the database so that the donations were correctly
recorded, said: ‘Collecting donations and recording them is becoming a larger task as Relay
grows larger. For 2010 we’re designing a new system that should rise to the occasion as
well as offering new kiosk and vendor systems.’
The last word has to go to a first-time relayer and cancer survivor from Australia, RebelMum
Slade, who is a member of the Friends Fighting Cancer team. The event took place in the
same weekend as her real life birthday and days before her four-year check-up, which was
clear.
Words cannot describe the impact of working with people from all over the world toward a
common goal. The utterly amazing international melting pot of people gathered in Second
Life to share laughter, memories and most of all to stand up to a common enemy is
empowering. The love and caring makes you wish the whole world could experience this.
Days after the event as I go for my walk, my head is a little higher, my stride faster and my
smile wider as I see myself doing backflips and running down the virtual track surrounded by
survivors, caregivers and supporters from every nation.
‘2009 was my first RFL in any life but you can bet this Aussie cancer survivor will be joining a
local group in real life too.
Next year’s campaign runs from March through July 2010 but plans are already being
made, so if you would like to play an active role please join the ‘SL’s RFL Volunteers’ group
and look out for the announcements.

2009 Event Activities

Below are listed the Activities available

for your enjoyment during the 24 hours of the 2009 Relay For Life event.
This is your opportunity to relax after 4 months of hard work in your
teams to raise the critically needed funds to support the American Cancer
Society this year as we continue to care for cancer victims, educate
society about cancer prevention, detection, and treatment, and support
the many families and caregivers of those with these diseases.

Theme Laps!

First and most importantly, walk, jog, skate, or otherwise traverse
the track as it wanders through the many sims that make up this year’s
Relay. Each lap from the starting lap for Survivors and Caregivers to
the Teams Lap at the end has a designated Theme. The theme changes each
hour. Check this website as well as the signs along the track to know
the theme for each hour. This year’s Theme Laps Coordinator is Arizona
Ballinger!

Scavenger Hunt!

Next, while walking, jogging, or otherwise doing your laps, participate
in the SCAVENGER HUNT. Hidden in each sim along the track is a clue
with a question related to Cancer. Find the clue, answer the question
correctly, and get a prize! You may even learn a few things you didn’t
know about various cancers along the way. Each question has 4 responses
and you get 4 tries to answer it correctly, so keep trying till you
get it right. You will then receive clues about the location of the
next hidden question along the way. Scavenger Hunt Coordinators are
Empress May Rosebud and Dr Ren Stonecutter!

Sailing!

Last year’s winner of the most inventive campsite award, the vibrant
Sailing Community of Second Life invites you to come and sail with us.
Join us for a Marathon Sail for Life. Skippers needed, crew needed,
come make a difference on the water. All skill levels needed. Want to
learn to sail? Sailors will be there to help. Already an experienced
skipper? Hot Laps (awards in all classes of boats) are for you. A massive
Charity Auction will feature all things nautical , including one-of-a-kind
items. Don’t miss it! Coordinator and Team Captain for Sailing is
Nber Medici!

Fishing!

You know a diet healthy in fish is good for preventing cancer, so come
catch your virtual dinner. Design has set up a beautiful area for fishing
in our Water Sailing and Fishing sim. Visit the vendor on the dock,
buy the supplies you need and fish! You may even amaze yourself with
what you catch and the stories are good for a year about the one that
got away! All proceeds go towards the Relay total, and it’s FUN too!
This year’s Master Fisherman and activity coordinator is Sweegy Manilow!

Medieval Myths and Mysteries!

Journey back in time to the Middle Ages and to a world of Myth and Legend.
Visit the RFL Activities Sim dedicated to the largest Fantasy Group
in SL, the Communities of the Elves! Visit a grassy grove surrounded
by age-old trees with a healing circle and fire in the center. Hear
the sounds of Nature or contribute your own sound to the mystical beat
of the Elven drums, or just sit quietly and meditate on the healing
power of the Universe. Participate in a Medieval archery tournament
and put an arrow into your favorite tumor! Prizes from the Empress Herself
for winners! Coordinators are Duchess Bee Blessed and Empress May Rosebud.

The American Frontier!

Visit the other half of the RFL Activities Sim and step back into America’s
past. Attend a Native American PowWow as you hear the music and see
the dance for healing from our Native American Brethren and Sisters
in SL! Attend an old-fashioned Rodeo and participate in a barrel race
or ride Black Bart the Bull (if you dare)! Make a donation to RFL at
the vendor and buy a horse that you can use in the barrel race or the
sod-bustin Horse Race for a neat prize to the winner! Check back with
this website for times of the races! Coordinators and a doctor to patch
you up are Bryan Damask and Dr Ren Stonecutter.

Tour-de-France in SL!

A NEW Activity this year, this bicycle tour will take you through an
entire RFL Activities Sim built to re-create the rolling French countryside,
a picturesque town, and a mountain road like those made famous by 7-time
international cyclist winner and CANCER SURVIVOR Lance Armstrong! Be
part of the Spirit of Relay and ride your way to Victory over Cancer!
Coordinators are the entire Activities Committee for RFLSL 2009!

Art Exhibit!

Another NEW Activity for this year, this exhibit features some of the
incredible art and artists who are creating unique pieces to honor and
memorialize the survivors, the caregivers, the victims, and the fight
against cancer itself. It is our intent to have these pieces scattered
in various sims along the track and in the campsites of those teams
that wish to participate in the exhibit. Coordinator for the Exhibit
and for the Memorial to Our Friends who lost their fight to this disease
is Mike Burleigh!

Mammography Demonstration!

For the first time ever in RFLSL we have a virtual mammography site
available for avatars to receive virtual mammograms from a real physician
in SL using equipment donated by the Ann Myers Medical Center. Come
see how it works and learn how simple, safe, and important it is to
have this test done regularly in real! Ride the roller coasters and
learn more about breast cancer too! Coordinator is Dr Vera Zhaoying.

Silent Auction!

Many wonderful items will be auctioned on Relay Day. View them and submit
your bids! If you have something you would like to see auctioned, contact
one of the coordinators or any member of the Activities Committee. Remember
that all proceeds go to this year’s Relay for Life! Coordinators are
Webgoddess Mars and Glenna Lane.

Fantasy Fair 2009

From June 15th to the 21st 2009, thousands of Second Life residents and creators are coming together to support the American Cancer Society's vision of a world without cancer. Friends Fighting Cancer (FFC) have transformed over half a million square meters of Second Life into a fantasy wonderland: the Fantasy Faire 2009 to benefit Relay for Life of Second Life (RFL of SL).
The Fantasy Faire 2009 is the largest gathering of fantasy designers, enthusiasts and performers in the history of the virtual world. A week of commerce, special events, live music concerts, exclusive items auctions, RFL ribbon hunts and fundraising to benefit Relay for Life and the fight against cancer. Avatars, clothing, furnishings, gadgets, goodies and exclusive items are available from top SL Fantasy Creators

This nine sim event is bringing together such fantasy genres as Neko, Elven, Furry, Dragon, Goth, Tiny and Sci-Fi. FFC's goal is to raise $4000 USD for RFL of SL. The Fantasy Faire 2009 will also offer visitors an opportunity to celebrate the survivors of cancer, remember and honor loved ones lost, and to fight back with the American Cancer Society.

The Fantasy Faire 2009 is produced by Friends Fighting Cancer, one of the Featured Designer Teams at this years Relay for Life of Second Life, with the support of the Phoenix Wave Team and ProfilesLive.com. Relay for Life 2009 Kickoff

By Bixyl Shuftan

On Saturday March 14 at 10 AM SL time, Relay for Life held it’s “Kick-Off Party.” The event was held in a stadium build to accommodate a huge crowd, a corner each in four sims, IBM, IBM 1, IBM 6, and IBM 7. The capacity was greatly needed, a look at the map showed a turnout of 150 people, that later went up to 170.

The leaders of Relay for Life thanked all for showing up, and there were stories if inspiration and hope given to the audience. Tears were expressed via text as times, at others the stadium was filled with enthusiastic cries of “Woooo!” and “Woo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo!” via gestures. It was also announced that 37 sims would be involved in the RFL walk.

After about an hour, the rally began to wind down, though people would stick around for a while, and played the following song:

“I run for hope, I run to feel,

I run for the truth, for all that is real,

I run for your mother, your sister, your wife,

I run for you and me my friend,

I run for life”

ACS grand re-opening TODAY!

American Cancer Society Announces Grand Re-Opening of Second Life Island Office
Sunday November 2, 2008
The American Cancer Society announces the grand re-opening of the newly re-designed island in the virtual world. For several years, the American Cancer Society has existed in Second Life through its volunteers, Relay For Life event, and an island that served as a central meeting place for volunteers and avatars, of those who are affected by cancer.
Over the last several months, the island has been completely redesigned to meet the growing needs of cancer patients and American Cancer Society volunteers in Second Life. In 2008, the Relay For Life of Second Life volunteers raised over $200,000 USD which cumulated with an event that was attended by more than 2,000 avatars on 35 sims. The new American Cancer Society Island in Second Life will feature a "Hope Haven," a place where the cancer survivor support group can meet regularly and in private so they can share intimate information with each other to help cope with diagnoses and treatment, as well as provide comfort and support for one another.
The new Island will also feature a 4-story, two-tiered office building that will be dedicated to Relay For Life volunteers. Making Strides Against Breast Cancer volunteers, Island Greeter volunteers, and an Information Library. American Cancer Society pamphlets and brochures will provide information related to cancer prevention, treatment options, support and information will be available in the Information Library, as well as informative videos about the history of the American Cancer Society, cancer information, patient support programs, and Relay For Life information.
Visitors will arrive at the island at the Welcome Center, where a volunteer will be available at all times to greet and provide direction and/or information. The island will also feature a Memorial Garden to remember loved ones lost, 2 amphitheaters for large meetings, several smaller outdoor meeting areas, and a medium sized office space in a separate building. Events will begin at 9.30am SLT with an opening ceremony scheduled to begin at 10am SLT, from 9.30 on visitors will be entertained by the lively DJs at T1 Radio while wandering tours take place. There will be greeters stationed around the island to direct and answer any questions and explain the area visitors find themselves in.
At 10.00am SLT opening comments and thank yous will take place hosted by Stingray9798 Raymaker in the Southeast Amphitheatre.
11am will see the Survivors' Makeover/Fashion Show sponsored and supported by FACES with Cinders Vale, Poppy Zabelin and Serendipity Nerd followed by a closing speech from Stingray9798 Raymaker.
*Please see full schedule of events below.
The objective of the new design has been to provide visitors with a breathtaking view, peaceful atmosphere, and a comfortable place for volunteers and those seeking information to return as often as they like. "The American Cancer Society plans to utilize the virtual office no differently (in concept) than any other office in any other city," says Jeffrey Montegut, the American Cancer Society's Second Life Manager. "The same services that are offered in a real life office should be available to the Second Life community, because there are real people facing real issues behind each and every avatar. The American Cancer Society recognizes that, and fully supports our volunteers in Second Life."

ACS in SL, the question is why?

Just recently I have heard this question a lot - The American Cancer Society in Secondlife - Why? Why should it mean so much to me? Why did I get involved, I am sure there are UK based Cancer charities in SL, so Why did I get involved?

Every person involved with ACS has a story to tell, every single person who donated a single Linden to the events that have taken place in Secondlife™ has a reason for doing so.

Most will not tell you why, and many thousands did just that this year during a spectacular season for RFL in SL, but do you know why ACS is in Secondlife? Who brought it there? Who has worked tirelessly for the last 4 years to bring ACS and RFL to SL?

Many of these questions I could answer but would be of little interest to you, our readers, but the last Question is why I am writing this today. I am asking for your help.

RFL is in 2nd life because Jade Lily wanted to do a fundraiser here in sl and transfer the funds to his local team he had called Randy when he had the idea, and that is how it was born, it is their hard work and dedication that has brought you events like the Relay for Life. RC brought us ACS island with help from people like The Soj. He is the reason many thousands of people, like myself, have found out about this amazing charity and finally he is the reason many thousands have sought help in a way they would not have done any other way.

Secondlife gives people the opportunity to seek help in a way that is more anonymous than any other. Those needing help don't always know who to ask, they also do not want to see the pity in peoples faces, so they either don't say anything or keep it to close family.
One of the most moving experiences I have ever seen was when a cancer survivor started talking to an ACS representative in SL after years of coping with Cancer alone.

Randal, or RC Mars in secondlife, is the reason, he stays in the background and most don't realise his hard work and dedication. He is not there to make himself known, he has brought ACS to SL to reach out and help those that need it. RC is the Community representative for the American Cancer Society.
Yesterday I got this message:
**Hello all, I am being asked to leave ACS as the Society cuts positions. My job has been eliminated, deemed not a necessity in these economic times. ** RC Mars.

Everyone is confused about ACS long term strategy in SL, with R.C. dismissal coming so soon after such a successful fundraising effort.
If you are so inclined please either call 1-800-227-2345 or go to http://www.cancer.org/asp/contactUs/cus_global.asp and add your voice to ours in asking WHY? LET’S BE HEARD!

Fund Raiser Money Goes Missing

When this story first came to light Graciella Princess editor of the new magazine "Bridging the Gap" came to me and asked for help, I put her in contact with the ACS and RFL in SL and helped try to puzzle all the info out that she got. We have agreed to both break this story but I have not reprinted all the details those you can get by reading the magazine CLICK here to get your copy now:

"Show me the money!" We heard that phrase many times in the 1996 film "Jerry Maguire©." Rod Tidwell's (Cuba Gooding Jr) character required Jerry Maguire (Tom Cruise) to repeatedly yell this through a telephone, to test his resolve and his eagerness to get Tidwell the best deal possible with his football team.

Now, here in SL™, we have been hearing that phrase a lot from a small group of people. They all have been saying "Show us the money!"

From August 5th 2007 through August 11th 2007, Heartland sponsored a major cancer fund raising drive. What we do know is that over 1.5 million lindens were raised for this fund raiser. What we didn't know was where that money ended up.

The fund raiser itself was called United for a Cure and is reported to have involved more than 150 sims. Relay for Life® was contacted towards the end of July to participate in this event. However, it was communicated that some of the organizers of the event wanted to split the proceeds between Relay for Life, and a friend of theirs that had recently been diagnosed with cancer and required treatment. RFL® at that time declined to participate based on the fact that they do not split donations.

It is at this point that things begin to unravel. On the first day of the event, August 5th 2007, an RFL representative and two of her colleagues showed up at the event and noticed that the collection boxes that were being used appeared to be outdated ACS (American Cancer Society) kiosks, but were not. The RFL representatives first offered to replace the kiosks with real RFL kiosks, but this offer was refused. They then attempted to shut down the event, due to their suspicion of fraudulent activity and were subsequently banned from the location.

The creator of the kiosks, Razor Nordberg, said that they used the ACS initials and a ribbon, taken from a picture found on a ribbon website, on the kiosks. At the time, he didn't see anything wrong with doing this, as the money would in fact be donated to ACS.

The event goes on to reportedly raise over 1.5 million lindens in the name of cancer to be donated to the American Cancer Society, as promised in Raubin Sachertorte's posts to the SL forums. All of the donated funds were transferred to Sachertorte to convert to US dollars and donate to his local ACS office in KS. It was agreed that every shop owner, every sim, every DJ that participated in this event would receive a copy of the receipt from the donation, so that they could proudly display it in memory of their participation.

Seven months pass however, and still there is no receipt. Organizers are getting ready to put together another fund raiser, and questions begin to arise about the whereabouts of the previous donations. These organizers then start putting pressure on Raubin Sachertorte, owner of Heartland and sponsor of the event to show evidence of some sort, that the money ended up at it's intended destination.

At this time, Sachertorte produced a receipt placed upon a prim at his location in Heartland. Upon examination however, the receipt appeared to be false. The date, September 23, 2007 was a Sunday when ACS offices were not open for business. Immediately, organizers contacted the ACS office that this was to be donated to, and sent a copy of the receipt.

An ACS representative stated of the receipt:
This looks like an acknowledgment card that we may have used in the past for memorial donations and we no longer have them available to us. In fact, I cannot remember seeing one in the time I have been with the American Cancer Society. I was told by someone else about the card. Now, any donations that come in are entered into a database and a receipt is sent from there. If a cash donation is made, we must fill out a form for the donation to be credited and a receipt sent.
We don't give receipts from the office anymore. We can give a copy of an "Acceptance of Funds" form, but the actual receipt comes from our business center. 2. I can't tell for sure by looking at it, but it doesn't look like an NCR duplicate. 3. Also, I noticed that our logo is a little off - it looks square in shape, but it should not be. If the logo is 1-inch high, it should be more than 1.75-inches wide.
The number on the "receipt" does not match the formatting for an identification number for a donation. I checked the number in our ordering system to see if it might be an item number for a package of acknowledgment cards, but it didn't match our item numbers either. Also, we have never used "Greater Kansas City" in any of our names. I have been with this office of the American Cancer Society since 1999 and the name of our office has been: "Kansas City Metro Office, Heartland Division, Inc." and now "Kansas City Metro Office, High Plains Division, Inc."

So, what really happened? According to Mr. Sachertorte, on September 2, 2007, he was on his way home from having hernia surgery. On his way, Sachertorte stopped off at the Kansas City Cancer Center. At this time, there was a major Relay For Life event under way, and Sachertorte donated all $4553 to the RFL event. He was given a white gift bag and several candles. At each of their RFL events, this particular facility does give out luminaries to the donators in honor of all that have lost their battle with cancer.
Mr. Sachertorte and his RL wife went home, and placed three of the candles upon their mantle, and put the others away. They took a picture of the receipt, and uploaded it to his wife's computer. Then, they put the gift bag and the receipt away. The circumstances that followed, led to a wild and crazy search for the wayward donations.

According to Sachertorte, when organizers and contributors started asking about the money, he was unable to locate the paper copy of the receipt. To make matters worse, the hard drive the receipt was stored on had been fried in a lightening storm. On top of that, his real life son had taken the camera to school to take pictures and had deleted the copy that was stored there.

In addition to the already questionable situation, Sachertorte was unable to remember the date that he made the donation, nor could he recall the location. Suspicions arose on all fronts.

A friend of Sachertorte, who believed that he had made the donation, offered to help out. The unnamed party made an ACS receipt for him. Sachertorte figured that since he made the donation, it wouldn't hurt to use this receipt. The only problem with this plan, besides the obvious illegality, was that the forgery was poorly done, and he was caught almost immediately.

Of the receipt, Sachertorte said: "The person that made the receipt made it because they felt that I was being done wrong and they wanted to try to help me and the bad part about it was I didn't even think about it when they did it. I didn't think about it. I thought 'that's sweet. I can get this rectified.' They were so adamant to try to help me out. And they were like 'you know what, you've done so much for me I need to do something for you.' I won't divulge this person's name because I know they're dying. I've talked to the person on the phone. I know that they are dying and there is nothing they can do about it."

In a telephone conversation with Sachertorte on May 9th, 2008, he gave the location of where he believed he had made the donation. Calls to this location proved fruitless however, as the contact claimed they didn't accept donations of any kind and had not run any cancer related fund raisers during the time period in question

During a follow up conversation with Sachertorte on May 12th 2008, he again gave the same location. To clarify the facts, a conference call was made to the location with Sachertorte on the line. This time however, the answer was different.

Not only was there an RFL event during the time period that the donation was made, they also gave out candles which Sachertorte described. An email was sent out to the Kansas City Cancer Center (KCCC ) requesting a formal verification of the donation.
Unfortunately, in a follow up telephone conversation with a representative of the KCCC, it was revealed that the donation could not have been made there for several reasons.

As of this time, the money has not been accounted for. Although it is still unclear who has the money, we do know who does not have it. ACS/RFL does not have the money. Kansas City Cancer Center does not have the money. Cancer Action, a cancer awareness group in KS does not have the money. Susan G Komen Foundation does not have the money. The area hospitals do not have the money.

The last person that we do know for a fact had the money was Raubin Sachertorte, who acknowledged receipt of the money in both the May 9th conversations and the May 12th conversations. Further, on May 12th, Sachertorte stated that he split the proceeds between three avatars in order to be able to cash it out. The avatars were himself, his RL wife, and one of her alternate characters.

At this time, all known leads have been checked into. The money has unfortunately, been unable to be located.

The American Cancer Society had this statement:

"The American Cancer Society is conducting an internal investigation into allegations of fraud, relative to Relay For Life in Second Life. As fraud is a matter of great concern in both the virtual and real worlds, the Society takes very seriously any instance in which such an activity might have been externally initiated. If the investigation into this particular fundraising matter determines that fraud may have occurred, the Society will pursue the criminal(s) and prosecute to the fullest extent of the law,as our donors would expect us to do as stewards of their resources."

- Jamie Kimbrough, Director, Media Relations Corporate Communications
American Cancer Society, National Home Office

Over 100 pages of text files, 5 hours of voice conversations and several pictures have been accumulated during the investigation for this article. All files have been made available to ACS as well as any law enforcement officials that may be investigating this issue.
